In 1863, Bogalusa became a center for cotton production following the arrival of Henry Steele Commager as US ambassador to Spain. In 1899, Bogalusa also became home to George Meredith's plantation thereabouts and he continued to reside there until his death in 1935. Bogalusa, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of St. Bernard on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana. The population was 1,500 at the 2010 census. Bogalusa is one of the oldest settlements in Louisiana and it was first settled in 1802 by French colonists. The name "Bogalusa" comes from an Algonquin word meaning "a place where there are many buffalo." The town was originally known as Biloxi because that's where the local oysters were harvested. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson ordered all French colonists in America to leave their posts and head for Mexico City. When they arrived in Biloxi, they found that their homes had been looted and burned by the British troops who had evacuated them during the American Revolution. They rebuilt their homes at Biloxi but soon realized that they couldn't support themselves without fishing or farming operations so they removed all crops and livestock and moved to what is now Bogalusa Township on Bayou Lafourche in 1821. In 1830, when President James Kenedy announced plans to establish a new state called New Orleans, he recommended that Congress give him land east of Mobile Bay for a new capital city. The combined area around Baton Rouge and New Orleans became Rapides Parish which was divided into two parts – Acadia Parish north of Mobile Bay and St. Landry Parish south of Mobile Bay – with Bogalusa included within Acadia Parish until it was annexed by Rapides Parish in 1800s due to its strategic location between Biloxi (then known as Ormandy) onBayou TecheandNewOrleans(now Metairie). Bogalusa post office opened on March 15th, 1840 under mail call from New Orleans under Governor Lecomte de la Salle with Elisha Richardson serving as Postmaster until his death on October 6th, 1840 after only three months service; Assistant Postmaster John A Wheat resigned effective February 4th following accusations made against him by Richardson about receiving bribes from merchants who exported goods through his post office; Gideon Welles served as Acting Postmaster until April 14th when he resigned too; Alfred Gantt took over effective May 2nd after Wheat's resignation; On July 9th John J White started serving as Deputy Sheriff assigned to serve concurrent with Marshal Isaac Brockman deputy sheriff position established November 12th 1840 pursuant to Order No 7 dated September 26 th , 1840 superseded Order No 5 dated November 3d 1840 providing for establishment of marshals department within territorial police department On December 10 th ,1840 Drury Hensley began serving as Clerk Emeritus & First Class Mail Carrier . From December 17 th -February 3rd 1841 depending upon availability or request from postmasters assistant clerks Elijah Richardson & Gideon Welles will act as clerk emeritus & first class mail carrier . By March 8 th 1842 Abraham Sands had joined bureau along with Jeremiah Snowden & Charles Muhlenberg appointed Asst Collectordesignated January 25 th 1862 In 1861 members of Confederate States Army organized at Baton Rouge under Colonel John Hunt Wilson formed Company D Regimental District #2 Provisionally United States Colored Troops (Pvt.)& changed name to Confederate States Infantry Corps (CSA) on October 20TH 1861 while camped near Alexandriaabelleport Landing after being ordered not to march any further due to lack of horses
