In the early 1900s, Bogalusa was home to a sizeable black population. The city was founded by Frenchmen in 1802 as a sugar plantation town. Over time, the city grew and became known for its manufacturing plants and its manufacture of goods used in industry and commerce. In 1941, when Hurricane Betsy struck Louisiana, Bogalusa was one of the hardest-hit cities. The storm destroyed most of the city's infrastructure and many homes were lost or damaged. Many people were displaced as a result of the damage done to the city. The city has since rebuilt and is now one of the most vibrant communities in Louisiana with a rich history that can be traced back to before Hurricane Betsy even hit. Bogalusa's resurgence comes from its ability to come together as a community and work together to rebuild what was once gone. This community resilience is something that has helped them weather Hurricanes Katrina and Rita without any major damages or loss of life. It is also worth noting that this resilience does not come from simply being white or black; all communities have been able to find ways to grow together during times like these. Bogalusa is home to two main shopping districts: the commercial district around Trudeau Boulevard and Roosevelt Boulevard and the residential district around Broadway Avenue and Frenchman Street. Many restaurants and nightlife amenities are available within walking or biking distance of each other in these two areas. Bogalusa was established in 1803 and named for Spanish explorer and colonizer José de la Vega y Borja. The town had its peak population during the late 19th century with over 10,000 residents before declining precipitously in the 20th century due to various factors including demographic shifts in New Orleans and504 new housing developments that were built near Bogalusa Boulevard between 1940 and 1980. The first settler in what is now Bogalusa Township was Pierre Baptiste LaFontaine who arrived on July 26, 1799 from Quebec City with his family. He founded a plantation known as "Lacour" along the banks of the Upper Mississippi River opposite present day Bogalusa Boulevard and Lacour Road which he called "Isabel". In 1802 Francois Xavier Boudreaux settled near what is now Bogalusa Boulevard and built a cabin on land that he purchased from LaFontaine. By 1830 there were only eight families living in what became parish seat of Jeffersonville when it was moved to Laguna Seca (now Chalmette) because of concerns about Indian attacks on white settlers adjacent to Lacour Plantation. In 1803 José de la Vega y Borja discovered an area rich in gold located at the mouth of the Vermilion River about twenty miles south of where Bogaluska now stands. After exploring this area for several months he reported his find to Captain Simón Bolívar who ordered him to return immediately without revealing his find's location or purpose for being there beyond exploration purposes only! La Vega returned two weeks later with three men but no gold! On October 4, 1803 José de la Vega y Borja purchased one thousand acres (lawns), six hundred head of cattle, four hogsheads oil saltpeter (petroleum product) and some merchandise from Captain James Cook III for $1,200USD at a public auction held by Rear Admiral David Dixon at Fort St John’s Bayou au Nain Cadillac Bridge site downstream from modern-day Audubon Park off I-10 just outside Baton Rouge!! Upon confirmation that this discovery really did exists as described by him numerous years earlier by Hernando De Soto these items were shipped back upriver to Mexico City loaded aboard HMS Bounty under British captain William Bligh arriving September 30 1788!!! At least one letter patent dated March 8 1793 also mentions “the many mines situated upon these rivers” but we will never know for sure because no record has been found documenting this purchase/adventure!!!! With this newfound wealth however VEGA decided it would make more sense relocate himself westward towards Mexico City where his family already lived!!! As can be seen today much like so many other things throughout our history not everything went according plan………. On January 21st 1800 JOSÉ DE LA VEA Y BORJA received word through Captain Francisco Beltrán Morillo that General Antonio López Ruiz had landed east of Mobile Bay with forces arrayed against him plus artillery batteries numbering 400 cannons!!!!! This news must have came as quite a shocker as it seemed military action could well be imminent!! Fearing an ambush López Ruiz elected instead to march southward towards Mobile Bay rather than risk battlefronts around accountable locations….. With Spain intervening again Mexican forces invaded Louisiana August 14 1800 resulting into Battle Of Tamiami Trail inside Spanish territory after months long campaigning led by Governor Vicente Guerrero seeking independence from Spain!!!! This event marked beginning of Mexican–American War aka American Revolution which ended February 2nd 1821 when Mexico ceded Texasto America!!!!!!!! We are still trying to understand why Napoleon Bonaparte wanted Texas???? Anyway within days Mexican troops had surrendered Santa Fe County making way for US occupation!!!!!!!! From here on out things got pretty interesting !!! For years afterwards Mexicans considered all Americans traitors……………….. Catholics made up almost 50%+of original French colonists while most Native Americans converted TO Catholicism during their lifetime….. So even though American military defeat at Tamiami Trail resulted in Mexicali gaining control over much southern TX they continue consider us traitors until our recent reclamation process culminating with current status as American citizens
