The name Bogalusa comes from a Choctaw word meaning "big water" or " Mouth of the Big Black River". In 1802, Jean Lafitte and his men discovered oil wells in what is now Bogalusa. They named their new settlement after General James Wilkinson's Creek Bridge which they crossed on their way to find oil fields at Iuka in Clay County. In 1865, Governor Huey Long established a military post called Camp Claiborne within the present-day boundaries of Bogalusa. The post was discontinued by Long in 1972 but it remains listed on the Louisiana state map as an active Military Post with current status as an Historic Site because it has been continuously occupied by members of the US Armed Forces since then! In 1886, General Edwin Ewing built his plantation just east of present day Bogalusa along Wilkinson's Creek. After years of hard work and dedication to farming and ranching operations, Edwin Ewing became one of Louisiana's most successful landowners and entrepreneurs during the late 19th century. Bogalusa is a small town in the Baton Rouge metropolitan area in Louisiana, United States. It is located on the north bank of the Mississippi River and is part of the Bogalusa-Laurel Parish census-designated place. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. The town was founded by Dutch colonists in 1699 as a trading post on the present day Bogalusa Highway south of modern Bogalusa. In 1803, it became a state capital and served as the seat of government for parts of Louisiana from 1804 to 1861. On July 4, 1862, it was renamed Lafayette after French general Lafayette who fought in American Revolutionary War against British forces. Bogalusa has been known for its cotton plantations since before independence from France. After Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815, many French Canadians decided to move back to America and set up farms here. Some began trading goods with Americans while others built homes around 1795 when surveys were made of land suitable for farming near what is now Bogalusa Creek Bridge Road and Bogalusa Boulevard (now US 81). By 1800, there were more than 130 people living here; by 1810 there were 274 residents. Cotton production started during this time but quickly decreased due to unfavorable weather conditions and competition from other crops such as corn which became an important export crop during this time period. During Reconstruction following Reconstruction Period (1868–1877), violence broke out between white settlers and black slaves who had become integrated into society through labor unionism and education programs run by former Confederate generals such as General Pemberton (a native of nearby New Orleans) and Governor John Crain (a planter). This violence led to increased social tension which contributed to economic decline throughout most of Baton Rouge Parish during this time period culminating with heavy loss of housing stock that caused mass migration away from Bogalusa over the next several decades until finally disappearing altogether by 1960 according to local historian Drayton Coleman’s study “Bogalusa: A History – Past Present & Future” In 1865, General Pemberton ordered all blacks out of what he called "the
