Bogalusa is a small town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. It was founded in 1851 by French settlers and named for the Bogalusa River. The town population was 1,100 at the 2010 census. Bogalusa is located on the east bank of the Bogalusa River, about north of New Orleans and south of Jefferson Parish. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Livingston Parish were French colonists who arrived from Quebec in 1804 and 1805. They named their new settlement after Bognorre de la Garenne—the most important village on the riverbank where they disembarked—and called it La Nouvelle-Orléans (New Orleans). The following year, they erected an early courthouse and jail near present-day Bogalusa Boulevard and Iberville Road. In 1849, they voted to change their name to Bogalusa after its chief tributary, the Bogalusse River. In 1851, a group of Baptist missionaries moved from Mobile to Beauregard Parish and started a religious colony known as Trinity Chapel Among these pioneers were John Rankin Banks (1817–95), who later became governor of Louisiana; John Atherton (1824–94), general agent for registration with state government; Archibald McGee (1827–92), justice of peace for Livingston parish; Wm Haney (1829–96); James Prentice Dillard (1800–65); Neely Sanford Martin (baptized Decatur Marcelin) (1836–1910); Lewis Cushing Maynard(1837?-1920)?; James Weldon English(?-1900)? On April 20, 1861 – one day before Confederate forces marched into Baton Rouge – residents living along Broadway Street Meeting House Road petitioned District Attorney Louisiana Mudd for an injunction against pro-slavery rallies being staged by General Robert Ewell's army at that time within Metairie parish boundaries parallel to but outside Bogalusa Township limits because “the inhabitants are…afraid that any military operations or demonstrations which may be made here will occasion disruption among them” On July 15th Mudd issued his orders authorizing troops under Captain William Troup marching through Metairie parish towards Alexandria when he learned about this petition he ordered his men not to enter any villages without prior notice or order from him also ordering Captain Troup not to fire upon unarmed people if found
Bogalusa was founded in 1824 by Andrew Bogalusa. It was named after the Shawnee word "Bogan" meaning "a place to hunt." The town grew quickly and by 1845, it had a population of over 500 people. In 1862, Bogalusa became the capital of Louisiana. In 1865, it was acquired by the United States government and renamed New Orleans.
