Bogalusa, Louisiana was the site of a gunfight on April 20, 1871 that ended in a victory for the Union forces. The battle occurred at an old plantation near present-day Bogalusa. The Union forces were led by General Philip Sheridan and the Confederate forces were led by General John C. Breckinridge.

Bogalusa, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 3,715 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from a Seminole Indian word meaning "to be thin or delicate." Bogalusa was founded in 1818 by Jean Baptiste Point du Sable and his people. It became an incorporated town in 1892. Bogalusa is located on the Mississippi River at its confluence with the Canal de la Loup and forms part of the St. Louis–Antioch metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Bogalusa were French traders who arrived in 1785 as part of La Salle's expedition to explore the lower Mississippi Valley. In 1801, Pierre Laclède built a fur trading post there and named it Fort de la Rivière (Fort on the River). In 1818, Jean Baptiste Point du Sable established himself here afterwinning a competitive black lottery for control of what is now Mobile County, Alabama. DuSable founded a small village called Bogue (now known as Point Comfort) about two miles west of where he had earlier built Fort de la Rivière. As early as 1817, he began to survey land that would later become Bogalusa Township and laid out streets and blocks north-south on his original grant from Governor John Talbot for $5 per acre ($ .50 per square foot). In 1892, when Bogalusa incorporated as an independent municipality within Jefferson Parish, it became one of only three towns east of Baton Rouge that did not receive statehood until 1959; all others were designated as "parks" within their respective parishes until 1978 when they were made full-fledged municipalities under then parish superintendent Rick Hebert's leadership). The reason given for this anomaly was that no town east of Baton Rouge wanted to become part of either Orleans Parish or Jefferson Parish because they considered themselves separate jurisdictions with their own police forces and government structures - something which Baton Rouge politicians consistently ignored over time while claims grew louder by property owners west of I-10 that their enclave was being encroached upon by increasingly powerful East Baton Rouge Parish officials (a charge never substantiated).
