Bogalusa is a small town in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. Bogalusa is part of the New Orleans–Metairie-Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Bogalusa were Creek and Kiowa Indians who came from Texas in 1805. They hunted buffalo for food and trade. In 1836, a group of French settlers arrived and built a cabin on the current site of Bogalusa. The first school in Bogalusa was established in 1839 by Rev. John Auld. At that time, there were only six white adults and twelve Indian children living in the community. In 1846, Democrat James Kenedy set up a store on Third Street near Third Avenue to provide goods for the military during the Mexican American War (1846-48). The store became known as Kenedy's General Store after its founder bought land around it to protect it from destruction by Native Americans who had also claimed ownership of the area. In 1865, George Washington Carver settled down near what is now Bogalusa with his family and began growing corn, cotton, potatoes and other crops which he sold along Second Street near present day Lafayette Boulevard. He named his farm Carver's Mills after president George Washington Carver who had helped him get started in this business venture.. In 1898, an act of Congress created Rapides Parish as an unincorporated district within Rapides County . It included all of present day Rapides Parish east of I-10 northward to include parts of Stroudsburg and Chisoxilla Counties . At that time there were no schools or churches located within our parish limits so early settlers formed groups together to build them . There were two churches located within our boundaries when rapids parish was created but they have since moved away because they could not compete with larger towns like New Orleans where education was free for all citizens regardless of race or color
