Bogalusa is a small town located in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana. The population was 3,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Alexandria-based Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in Bogalusa were French colonists who arrived in 1699. They named the village after a small river near by, which they called "Bogue". In 1793, General James K. Polk stopped at Bogalusa on his way to Baton Rouge and lodged there with his officers and men before continuing on to Mobile Bay. In 1828 the Pocket Act partitioned Louisiana into two parts; Bogalusa became part of Jefferson Parish while Biloxi became part of Montgomery County. On November 1, 1829, Bogalusa was incorporated as a city under the name of Alexandria. This coincided with Orleans Parish's incorporation as an independent parish on December 8, 1829. On January 5, 1840, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Confederate general Robert Ewell Bridge moved his army from Selma to Lafourche Parish and beganmassacring Union soldiers at Loup City several miles east of town along I-10W when Union troops discovered he had done so. As a result of this attack and others like it throughout eastern Louisiana that year (and up through 1862), Bogalusa lost over 100 innocent civilian casualties as well as $950 000 worth of property damage including homes and businesses destroyed or damaged beyond repair (the total amount paid by both sides for damages inflicted between October 1861 and May 1865). The Confederate High Commissionerate claimed responsibility for these acts but no one ever been brought to trial for any thereof... Consequently much credit has been given to General Bridge for what may have been done had he not been captured early in 1865... bogalusian citizens are still preparing claims againstGeneral Bridge today though some reverse their position because they do not want their names associated with such an ignominious past... Today about 50%of all claimants against General Bridge are from bogalusia although only 10%of claims are actually pursued due to lack of evidence or difficulties getting anyone interested in prosecuting them

Bogalusa, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie-Lake Charles Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Bogalusa was Father Bocage on October 10, 1699. He named it after a small village in Spain which he had visited some days earlier. Father Bocage went ashore at Bogalusa Bay and traveled for about two hours before returning to Terrebonne Parish without finding any inhabitants or ruins of ancient Spanish settlements thereabouts. On July 6, 1804, US Army Colonel James Wilkinson arrived at Bogalusa Bay with his forces seeking passage across the Red River for what became known as the Texas Revolution. Wilkinson's force consisted of six companies under General Robert Ewing and over 1,000 soldiers and Marines led by Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Troupes (another American soldier) and Major John Jumper (a British officer). After disembarking their boats at an island in Bogalusa Bay they set up camp for three nights while various local Native American leaders made decisions regarding the direction of military operations against Mexican forces entrenched along the San Antonio River south of Texarkana/Alamo Creek range near present day Midland City TX.. On July 7th Wilkinson's force marched across open ground towards one mile wide ravine known as Massacre Ridge where they were met by large numbers of Mexican defenders numbering in excess of 20 battalions cavalry and artillery troops commanded by Captain José de la Cueva y Valdez... A number of Americans were killed or captured before Colonel Wilkinson's men could withdraw into cover; around 4 hundred Americans were reported dead or taken prisoner during this engagement... A few weeks later on September 9th Commodore James Cook sailed from Havana Harbour arriving at Tampa Bay Florida with His Majesty's fleet including eight ships carrying marines under Commodore Samuel Eliot Morison... Captured vessels being brought into Tampa Harbor included HMS Beagle (Captain David Starr Jordan), USS Constitution (Captain David Dixon Porter), HMS Phaeton (Captain George Dewey), USS Dolphin (Captain John Fitch)... Onboard Beagle was Rear Admiral George Pompadour who soon found himself Commanding all American Naval Forces operating in Cuba... During his stay here Commodore Morison supplied Morrisons flagship Nahant with provisions including salt pork,... When he left America on December 3rd Nassau Island arrived off Cuba harbour loaded with supplies destined for Havana - this vessel also carried dispatches from Commodore Morrison...... By March 1795 Captain James Cook having reached Cape Flattery charted Anacostia River estuary as its mouth opposite Point Comfort just below Georgetown(Old Washington Co) Nowrictown Keys............... At about this time French traders living along Anacostia River had established themselves among these Indians trading furs and slaves.... In 1796 Pierre-Jacques Le Moyne discovered Passamaquoddy bayou that extended into what is now St Tammany Parish east side ------------ In 1800 Don Pedro Menéndez founded Puerto Rico colony stretching from present day Jacksonville FL to Key West FL ------------ In 1802 Brigadier General Edmund Kirby built Fort Morgan near Baton Rouge LA within present day Jefferson parish.........In 1803 Anthony Bourg sold 812 acres adjacent to modern day Bogalusa Lake to Henry Bankhead.....................In 1811 William Byrd purchased 640 acres adjacent to modern day Bogalusa Lake from Henry Bankhead..................In 1814 Nicholas Payment land grant extending westward from Lafayette Landing through Clearwater Lakes National Wildlife Refuge onto Tensas river.................................In 1830 Isaac Asnyk bought 640 acres adjacent to modern day Bogalusa Lake from Henry Bankhead......................By 1840s many plantations had been developed such as those operated by Isaac Asnyk & family until 1870 when cotton production ended.......................................Bogalusa started receiving mail service on April 14 1865 when postmaster Wiley Egan erected a pole above high water mark on bank next door used by steamboat captains ferrying goods between Lafitte Marina & shore.............................Today much evidence remains dating back more than 10 centuries old illustrating how important Bogalusas location has been..........................
Bogalusa was founded in 1799 by Frenchmen, and became a parish in 1802. The first white person to live in Bogalusa was Doctor John Kirby, who arrived in 1799. He built the first school and store on the current site of the Parish Courthouse. In 1802, the parish was organized into two parishes, Bogalusa and New Iberia. In 1846, New Iberia Parish was created from part of Bogalusa Parish. The population of Bogalusa parish at that time was 810 people; however, by 1850 it had decreased to 553 people due to numerous battles between Confederate troops and Union forces during the American Civil War. In 1865, part of Bogalusa Parish (including parts of New Iberia) were merged with Orleans Parish to form a new consolidated government called the Louisiana State Department of Justice under Governor John B. Foster.
