Bogalusa is a town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,802 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1819 by Captain John Bogalusa and his family of Frenchmen who had come overland from what is now Haiti to establish a trading post on the Trinity River. The first European settlers arrived in 1829 and by 1830 Bogalusa consisted of only about thirty families. By 1840, however, it had grown to over one hundred families with several stores and two churches. In 1856, General Joseph Epps ordered all slaveholders in the parish to send their slaves into bondage within three months or face punishment. Most residents chose not to comply and continued to own their slaves until after Reconstruction ended in 1865. After the end of Reconstruction, many citizens decided that they wanted nothing to do with southern politics and voted against returning to Confederate rule. In 1875 Bogalusa became an independent municipality when it amalgamated with other nearby towns under a new name--Bogalusa Township--in order to create a more efficient government structure for the community. The town has experienced various waves of growth throughout its history; most notably during World War II when it grew rapidly due to wartime production needs for military materials such as aircraft parts and tires. Since then, though, Bogalusa's economy has been largely dominated by service-sector businesses such as health care providers and small factories that use local materials rather than manufacturing products outside of Louisiana. In recent years there have been efforts made by some members of the publicto revive interest in downtown Bogalusa which has seen limited success despite being marketed as an " artsy haven." There are also plans underway for development around Interstate 10 which would add thousands of jobs directly or indirectly across multiple industries including construction, engineering, healthcare services etc.. Bogalusa is a small town in southwestern Louisiana, United States. It is the county seat of Jefferson Parish and part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. The name Bogalusa comes from an Atakapa Indian word meaning "a dead body" or "the place where there are no trees." The first European to visit what is now Bogalusa was a French trading post called Fort de Chartres on April 17, 1699. A Spanish mission founded in 1718 also had a small community nearby. By 1800, Bogalusa and its surroundings were included within Rapides Parish, so it lost its importance as a parish seat until 1807 when it became part of Jefferson Parish. The first white settlement in what is now Bogalusa was established by Isaac Jameson in 1819 as the Wilkinson family's plantation called Eagle Ford on the Baton Rouge River near present-day I-10 and US-101. Jameson named his plantation for John Bogalus, an Englishman who had come to Louisiana in 1815 as captain of HMS Beagle under Rear Admiral Sir John Hawkins to explore new territory then being explored by American commandership under General Andrew Jackson (1767-1845). After exploring most of coastal Louisiana, Hawkins sailed back across the bayou St. Bernard at anchor off Laguna Blanca on October 3rd 1815 with Lieutenant George Dallas’s exploration party consisting of five men: Captain David Richardson (commanding), Second Lieutenants Edward Gist (Jupiter) and George Browne (Vega), Quartermaster 1st Class Joseph Weems (Citizen Kane), Drury Lane seaman Ebenezer Sibley (Captain Kidd) and Master Commandant Samuel Morse who acted as interpreter for all visitors including Captain Richardson and First Lieutenant Dallas; they reached Mobile Bay November 7th after spending September 12th & 13th ashore at Baton Rouge Island [present day Lee Air Force Base] . They landed about two miles above present site of Bogalusa on a low bluff overlooking today’s I-10 bridge abutting water deep enough only for boats used by travelers going between Mobile Bay & Baton Rouge Island but too shallow for ships moored thereunto; they built their cabin therefor along with stores and other equipment before returning December 15th [November 26th] aboard HMS Beagle to report their discoveries back home to London via Governor Arthur Phillip’s privateer “Andros” which arrived January 8th next year off Point Comfort [now New Orleans] In 1850, following Reconstruction in America following the end of slavery in America, Jefferson Parish land holdings were redistributed among various racial groups through congressional legislation known as The Readjustment Act Of 1870 which gave blacks ownership 25%Of all municipal property within any parish except Alexandria City Limits which remained racially segregated until 1963 when that city become engulfed within Orleans County . In 1880 Census data shows that Elijah Price owned 98 acres within present day Bogalusa limits adjoining current I-10 bridge ..... since Black Americans were not given voting rights until 1964 legal boundaries have changed many times making this exact location difficult if not impossible to find .... Elijah Price died circa 1890 leaving his vast acreage largely unclaimed until recently when some enterprising individuals set out to reclaim it ........... finally located obscurely behind old military installation just east of town limits......................... There are several stories associated with early life around here: one story says that pioneer Daniel Boone came through here while traveling upriver from Mississippi Valley; another tells how one young man -- later elected law enforcement officer -- prospected land around here before settling permanently near Bolivar Lake; yet another tells how Chief White Thunder visited during Indian Wars days upstream from here One such account suggests that early residents may have been able to drink Christian water brought overland downriver from Texas because locals found natural creeks providing fresh water without difficulty............... Some interesting facts about this little known corner of southern Louisiana include: * There are still remains believed buried beneath ground at Eagle Ford Plantation where Isaac Jameson's initial settlement took place * One mile west of town limits lies Polk Street Cemetery operated by both Baptist Church services & Catholic Church services - also contains unmarked graves dating back centuries

The town of Bogalusa was founded in 1901 on the east bank of the Mississippi River, just south of present-day Monroe. Bogalusa became an important transportation and manufacturing center during the early 20th century. The town was destroyed in a flood in 1951, but its rebirth occurred in 1984 when it was chosen as the site for a new college, Tulane University.
