It is located on Bayou Teche between I-10 and US 71. Bogalusa is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Bogalusa was Father Jacques Marquette in 1699. He named it after Bagoghus, an Indian chief who had been killed by a French expedition near present day Biloxi, Mississippi on December 6, 1699. In 1723, Jean Baptiste Chouteau entered Bogalusa with 300 men and women as prisoners of war from the ship "Pelican". In 1836, Englishman John Ligonier set up a trading post here with his postilion Lafayette Dessalin attached as governor. In 1840, General Andrew Jackson made this area his prison for $1 million worth of slaves he had captured during his campaign against cotton growers in Alabama and Georgia. After their release he allowed them to return home but developed plans to build an army to crush these abolitionists and conducted raids into neighboring states carrying off large quantities of property belonging to abolitionists including crops grown by these people - all without permits or compensation from either state governments which were then responsible for governing these areas under Confederate rule when New Orleans was still a part of France

Bogalusa is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of St. Bernard Parish. Bogalusa was founded in 1812 by Frenchmen and Spanish colonists as la Boca de Bogalusa, meaning "the mouth of bog". The name may be derived from the Santo Domingo word "boga" (a type of sugarcane), meaning "savage place." The first settlers in what is now Bogalusa were Frenchmen who arrived in 1765 and named it la Boca de Bogalusa after a small river they had discovered there. In 1812, following the cession of Louisiana to Spain by France, Englishman John Wade established a trading post here with relationships with Spanish traders and Indian chiefs. He named it La Boca de los Angeles because he thought the river where he built his post was located near an ancient city known as Los Angeles. In 1818, when Lafayette visited this area on his way to Baton Rouge for military operations against Mexico, he camped here for several nights before continuing his journey northward. When he reached Baton Rouge late on November 25th, 1818 – about two weeks after Mexican forces under Santa Anna had suppressed an uprising among American troops led by Ulysses S. Grant – Lafayette spent time at La Boca de los Angeles before proceeding onward to Baton Rouge on December 2nd aboard the USS Constitution flagship visiting New Orleans for Christmas gifts to Confederate generals Pemberton and Banks. In 1840–41 the US marshals arrested many freed slaves living near Bogalusa while they were trying to escape towards New Orleans; these fugitives were given shelter and food by local farmers until finally reaching their destination some 10 miles outside of town on orders from General Andrew Johnson during Operation Crossroads less than one year later on April 20th, 1865 during the American Civil War between Northerners and Southern planters supported by Federal troops commanded by General Johnston On October 5th 1861 Frenchman Auguste Charette erected a small log cabin near present-day Bogalusseeouka Beach which served as his home until his death in 1902 One account says that Captain John Cushing's store was destroyed early one morning in 1863 when Union soldiers burned down part of St Bernard Parish due to cattle rustling; however no evidence supports this story On January 3rd 1862 Confederate general Robert Ewell laid siege to town resulting in its evacuation; most residents returned within days with few injuries or losses During Reconstruction efforts begun immediately following Ewell's occupation much effort was made to rebuild what had been lost including plans for a new courthouse but these failed due largely to lack of funding . There are reports that white men raped black women during this time period but no definitive proof exists
Bogalusa was founded by African Americans in the 1830s as a fishing and trading post on the banks of the Arkansas River. The town grew quickly, and by 1855 it had a white population of about 350. In 1865, Bogalusa was incorporated as a city. By 1910, its population had grown to 2,500. In 1930, Bogalusa's black mayor died in office; his death led to an election campaign in which black candidates won control of the City Council. In 1960, Bogalusa became a state capital; it has since been renamed Jefferson Parish.
