Bogalusa is a city in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,806 at the 2010 census. It became an incorporated town in 1868. Bogalusa was named for the swampy region surrounding it on the lower Mississippi River. The city of Bogalusa was founded by two brothers, John and James Bogalusa, in 1851 as a post office called "New Orleans". In 1857, they opened a general store and hotel in what is now downtown Bogalusa. They also began to build homes around their store and hotel. The brothers were successful entrepreneurs who invested capital into two banks and built four other businesses including three textile mills that produced cotton yarn for export to England and France. In 1865, they sold their businesses to become trustees of the First National Bank of New Orleans. In 1870, after becoming trustees of the bank, John and James Bogalusa purchased 4 acres (1 km²) of land at what is now Marie Street near River Road for $500 from Moses Waddell.
