The city was founded in 1894 by a group of Dutch farmers and their American Indian guides, who named it for the small mountain near their farmstead. Bogalusa became an important center during the early days of the Louisiana Purchase, when it served as a trading post between French settlers and Native Americans. The city experienced a period of growth during World War II when its population increased from 10,000 to over 25,000. After the war, Bogalusa reverted to its pre-war size and character as a farming community with modest industry. Bogalusa is on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River and about midway between New Orleans and Metairie. The town was founded in 1837 by French colonists as a result of the Trail of Tears campaign led by General Andrew Jackson to remove Native Americans from what is now southeastern Louisiana. On October 15, 1837, Governor Claiborne Pell proclaimed Bogalusa "the first post west of the Alamo" because it had been evacuated from Mexico after Texas won its independence from Spain. In 1865, Bogalusa became a U.S. military garrison during Reconstruction following the American Civil War; it served as an important port on the Mississippi River for shipping cotton crops to Great Britain and other European countries before becoming an agricultural community in the late 19th century. In 1916, Bogalusa was renamed for Countess Emmeline de Rothschild who donated land for a high school and college in nearby Metairie. Bogalusa has had several floods over recent years which have destroyed homes and businesses along with damaging infrastructure such as roads and bridges; however, no fatalities have been reported as a result of these events so far. Bogalusa is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Bogalusa was founded by French Canadians in 1785 as a post on the Iberia River. In 1802, the village became part of Rapides Parish and then Jefferson Parish when it was created from parts of both parishes. In 1815, Pierre Lafitte and his men took refuge near Bogalusa during the American Revolution. After hostilities ceased, Lafitte built a fort at nearby Fort St John to protect his interests in New Orleans. In 1840, an act providing for public education passed in Congress and was ratified by President Jackson; Bogalusa received its first school district that year. In 1849, Drury College opened its doors here; it would remain open until 1943 when it merged with Tulane University to form Tulane University System. During World War II (1939-1945), Bogalusa served as one of many locations used by Air Force Bases No. 1 and 2 in New Orleans; after V-E Day (4 June 1945), all military installations were closed down across America and many residents left for Europe or other areas due to news of the end of World War II early in 1946. After Hurricane Katrina struck August 2005 and damage resulted from high winds and rainfall (storm surge waters reached up to 30 feet above ground level some places), there was significant population displacement within Biloxi County among others due to loss of homes or businesses; however most people returned home within three weeks following landfalling waves along with support from local government entities including FEMA which transported massive amounts supplies such as food, water filters, generators etc.. The largest concentration occurred around US Army Garrison Shreveport/New Iberia while smaller concentrations also existed around Bastrop parish & Lake Pontchartrain.; However much like post-Katrina Biloxi County has bounced back quickly assimilating into various aspects of normal life having seen no major infrastructure damage or lack thereof since Post-Katrina days which supports belief that reconstruction will continue apace without any major obstacles
Bogalusa was founded in 1785 by French colonists. The town was named for the Bogalusa Rapids, which ran through the area. In 1837, Bogalusa became a parish in Orleans Parish.
