The area that would become Baton Rouge was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Lafayette Parish. The first European to visit Baton Rouge was a French trading post called Fort d'Iberville established in 1712. In 1802, after Napoleon Bonaparte's failed invasion of America, General James K. Polk set out from St. Louis with plans to cross the Mississippi River and take possession of present day Arkansas and Missouri for the United States. After crossing at Prairie du Chien, Polk's army encountered a well-fortified Indian resistance force led by General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of Houssaye on July 4th, 1804. Although outnumbered two to one and suffering heavy casualties, Jackson emerged victorious over a numerically superior opponent and became an American hero. In 1808 Governor John Caddo granted land to Stephen Fenton for his colony of Acadians who named it Baton Rouge after their leader La Salle. This spot had been disputed between various settlements until 1814 when General James Kenedy decided to make it part of his new territory included within Section 10A bounded on the north by Iacobus Street on the east by Broadway Avenue on the south by Roman Catholic Stations Road (now Wilkinson Boulevard), and lying westward along current US 51.
