Baton Rouge, Louisiana is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana and the seat of Jefferson Parish. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census, making Baton Rouge one of the most populous cities in Louisiana. Baton Rouge is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and its industries include aluminum smelting, shipbuilding, oil refining, paper manufacturing, food processing and other services. The area that became Baton Rouge was originally settled by French colonists in 1718 as part of la Louisiane region. It was named for General La Bourgneuse (1701-70), who fought during the American Revolution against British forces before dying at sea off Pointe aux Chaumes on July 14, 1718. The first permanent European settlement in what would become Baton Rouge occurred when Pierre Villemain founded a small post called Houma de la Saline on March 27, 1736 near present-day Lake Ponchartrain. The post served as a base from which New Orleans could be defended against Indian attacks until after France's defeat in the Seven Years' War (1754-63). In 1762, following French victory over Great Britain in the Battle of Jauguska (September 7), Governor Nicolas Darrius Beauregard designated Baton Rouge as capital of Lower Louisiana ceded to Spain by Great Britain during their war with France. In 1802, after Orleans had been designated as the new capital ofLower Louisiana following its purchase from Spain by President James K. Polk under his administration – also under president James K. Polk – Baton Rouge reverted to its original name: La Bourgneuse County Seat (now Jefferson Parish). In 1865–66 Captain John Cushman and his detachment were sent by then-Governor Adlai Stevenson to quell an insurrection among freedmen known as "the Black Codes." Confederate troopsfired upon Cushman's unit while it pursuit white civilians fleeing plantations into downtown Baton Rouge; three men died and twenty-six were wounded including Cushman himself.* Two years later Robert Ewell organized a force called White League Tigers to resist Reconstruction efforts led by General Nathan Bedford Forrest and Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sibley – both associated with southern Reconstructionist parties – within Jackson Parish††*. On November 1st 1868 an ambush resulted in five deaths*, four being Confederate soldiers*‡††‡* including Ewell himself*, United States Colored Troops Colonel Samuel Barnes (*) [*), Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Smith (*) [*) & Major Elias Waugh (*). A total of ninety black men were killed throughout all Southwestern Louisiana during 1868 alone *. Greatest number killed thus far in any year since 1860s despite much violence& agression against black citizens
