Most people know about the discovery of America by Columbus in 1492, but they may not know about the creation of scopes. In 1753, French explorers named La Salle discovered an offshore island that he thought was India. They named it Réunion because they thought it would be a good place to find oil resources. The French also discovered some strange rocks on this island and decided to bring back specimens so they could study them further. Some of the first scopes were made in Bastrop County, Louisiana. One was built by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1802 and is still used today. It was called the “Grand Vaisseau” and had a telescope that could reach up to 350 feet (100 meters). Another scope was built by John James Audubon in 1827 and is still used today for scientific observation. The first American telescope manufacturer was Samuel Fogg who started manufacturing telescopes in 1849 in Concord, Massachusetts. He sold his products all over the United States until his death in 1896. Many other top Telescope Manufacturers were founded during this time including Wigglesworth & Co., Cooke & Loomis, Henniker Brothers Observatory Company, McGraw-Hill Optical Company, National Geographic Society etc……..

Bastrop, Louisiana is a small town located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. Bastrop was founded in 1848 by Captain John McLaughlin and his family as a post office called Eastpointe on the bluff overlooking the mouth of the Assumption River. It was named for General James Wilkinson, who had won distinction during the Mexican-American War and become governor of Texas A&M University's Galveston campus. The first store in Bastrop opened its door on Commerce Street on April 6, 1851. The post office moved to its present site in 1858 and continued to be called Bastrop until 1915 when it became known as Bastrop Parish. In 1886, the parish seat was transferred from Eastpointe to Bastrop and it has remained there since then. Today, downtown Bastrop is a popular tourist destination with several restaurants, bars, and stores lining Main Street between Market Place and I-10th streets. Many businesses are also located along Second Street which runs parallel to Main Street through downtown Bastrop before turning northeast towards Highway 190th Street where it continues into neighboring Jefferson County. This arterial road provides access to most of the local recreation areas including Lake Charles Park just east of town center and Plumas National Forest just west of Interstate 10 near Carthage Plantation off Highway 190th Streets). There are several festivals each year significant enough to warrant their own article such as FolklifeFestivals (a music festival), Fourthof JulyFairs (largest fireworks show in Louisiana), Christmas Eve & Christmas Day (Christmas trees decorations go up), Catholic Masses (several times throughout year), State Fair Days (four major events each year) among others but here are some highlights:

In 1824, George Stephenson invented a locomotive that could be harnessed to power an optical instrument called a reflecting telescope. These instruments allowed scientists to see objects up close and learn about astronomy and meteorology. By 1830, all of Europe had some form of optical instrument or telescope. In America, development was slower due to lack of money and interest in science at the time. However, by 1846, American astronomers had developed what is known as a Lowell Observatory Telescope which allowed them to view stars beyond our Earth’s atmosphere for the first time!

Bastrop is a small town in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known settlement in Bastrop was on a bluff overlooking the river that now forms Bastrop Lake. A post office called "Bastrop" was established in 1834, and remained in operation until 1906. In 1838, William Crain built a log cabin here which he named "Crain's Fort". In 1861, Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston occupied this fort as his headquarters during the Battle of Prairie du Chien. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant drove Johnston out of Bastrop and took over command of the area for the Confederacy. In 1868-1869, Confederate Colonel John Rankin built a mill here which became known as Rankin's Mill after him. The mill produced cotton gin yarn for export to other parts of the Confederacy; it continued to operate until it burned down in 1918. Description: After years of being underdeveloped due to lack of development funds and interest from businesses that could not see potential in what was available - primarily residences - Bastrop finally saw some growth with construction finally beginning on what would become its most distinguishing feature - its elementary school system! And so began one of America's longest running school systems serving rural areas across all levels with an emphasis on early childhood education...though much has changed since then (most notably Hurricane Katrina slammed into Gulfport/Baton Rouge area knocking out power and leaving many schools closed), there can be no doubt that Bastrop Elementary School District Number One remains one of America’s premiere public education institutions!
