Bastrop is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. Bastrop is the seat of Jefferson Parish and the only municipality in the parish. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The town was founded by Lieutenant Colonel John C. Smith in 1827 as a post office on a small island in the Assumption River near present-day Bastrop Island. The first postmaster was Nicholas Cantrell. In 1829, Smith donated land to the town for an arsenal and storehouse to be used for military purposes; this donation formed what is now Bastrop Boulevard. A millrace connected the Assumption River with Lake Pontchartrain and furnished water for Bastrop until 1865; thereafter, it served as a drainage ditch for nearby plantations and farms before being diverted into the Gulf of Mexico through a channel known as "the Ditch". In 1892, George Washington Hardin purchased 4,000 acres (1 km²) of land east of present-day Bastrop from Jeter & Co., developers of Alexandria Plantation; this land became known as Hardin Ranch after Hardin's purchase. In 1902, Harry Fenton acquired another 1 million acres (4 km²) south of downtown Bastrop from Hardin Ranch; this tract became known as Fenton Ranch after Harry Fenton's acquisition. Bastrop had its start as simply "Baston" on October 15, 1799 when French colonists named it Fort Amandet following their landing there on August 14 that year during Operation Esprit de Lune under command of Lt.-Colonel David Forbes. At one time or another every parish in southeastern Louisiana had at least one post office: Baton Rouge (1794), Houma (1802), Mobile (1803), New Iberia (1806), Stroudsburg (1828), Livingston Parish (January 1, 1830), East Carrollton Parish (January 1, 1830), Natchitoches Parish/Jacksonville Township Bonded District No 2(February 5th 1800)(March 3rd 1800)(November 9th 1800)[1], Rapides Parish/New Iberia Parishes #2(February 5th 1800)(March 3rd 1800)(November 9th 1800)[2], Ascension County Courthouse Annex(October 15th 1799)[3],[4],[5],[6], Coushatta Harbour Light House(October 25th 1799)[7],[8],[9] - all were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina on September 12 2005 including Richmond Road Station which stood unverified but may have been located just downriver from where Old Cypress Point Marina now stands[10].

Bastrop, Louisiana is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 6,898 at the 2010 census. It is named after General James Wilkinson Bastrop, who served as an officer in the Confederate States Army and was killed during the Battle of Gettysburg. The first settlers arrived in what is now Bastrop in 1848. By 1860, about 60% of the residents were African Americans. In 1865, Bastrop became part of the Texas Confederation and soon developed into a major center for cotton production due to its location on the crescent-shaped River Kiska. In 1881, President James Buchanan decided to create two new districts for Louisiana: one including Bastrop and Port Hudson; and another including most of Jefferson Parish east of the Mississippi River. The district which included Bastrop was designated as East Baton Rouge District No. 1. The cotton industry declined during World War II because of strategic bombing by U.S. bombers; however, it revived with post-war development that include housing developments and casinos along Interstate 10 near downtown Baton Rouge
Bastrop was founded in 1821 by Frenchmen and Spanish colonists. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Louisiana River, which made it a valuable market for goods shipped from the Mississippi Valley. In 1836, Bastrop became an independent city and was renamed for General Sam Houston.
