Bastrop is a city in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 15,764 at the 2010 census. Bastrop is the county seat of Livingston Parish. The name "Bastrop" comes from French for "place where bald-headed cows used to graze." The first settlement in what is now Bastrop was made on a bend in the river by two men named John and James Bastrop on November 15, 1819. They named their new town after Captain Jean-Baptiste Bourgogne who had been captured at the Battle of Waterloo with his army and taken to England as a prisoner. On December 20, 1820, the Treaty of Paris ceded all of Louisiana to the United States including Bastrop County. In 1849, Senator Thomas Hart Benton sponsored an act that designated Bastrop as the state capital of Louisiana. The move was met with opposition from many local officials because it would have moved them out of their homes and into one big city which they felt would be nothing but trouble. After much debate and a failed attempt by Benton to get ratification from both houses of Congress, he resigned his Senate seat rather than support the capital move. However, this didn't stop other legislators from trying to make it happen or from continuing to push for it even when Benton wasn't around anymore. In 1860, Representative Ira Thurmond proposed moving Baton Rouge back to New Orleans due to concerns about its potential impact on nearby Jefferson Parish's growing agricultural industry; however no action was ever taken despite Thurmond's attempts at getting hearings started in Congress prior thereto (although he generally lost these). It wasn’t until 1865 that Governor Andrew Johnson finally approved plans for what would become Bastrop – then known as Prairie View A&M University – located adjacent to what is now Thayer Drive off Interstate 10 just south of downtown Lafayette/Baton Rouge traffic arteries (I-10 & US 90). This gave bastrop some much-needed fame as America’s “University City” during World War II when more than 60% of all white college graduates served in uniform either within or outside Texas or Normandy battlefields where they were exposed not only physically but also emotionally and mentally during one of history’s most dramatic conflicts – World War II! When President Lyndon B Johnson announced plans for Civil Rights Movement leader Dr Martin Luther King Jr., Jr.'s assassination via car ride from Memphis through Baton Rouge into central Louisiana on April 4th1965 - less than three weeks before his planned assassination - pandemonium erupted throughout metropolitan Lafayette/Baton Rouge with thousands upon thousands gathered spontaneously converging along I-10 near Thayer Drive knowing full well that something extraordinary was soon going down there…and it did! This paper will focus mainly on aspects associated with Bastropy such as its history (which incidentally spanned over 200 years), culture (including various Black music styles popularized here), commercial attractions like shopping malls and casinos which have helped keep bastrop economically active since its heyday in the 1960s thru 2000s while also resurrecting some proudly local businesses such as Berry Bros BBQ & Barbecue which has been open since 1959 🙂

Bastrop County is located in the northwestern corner of Louisiana, bordered by Texas to the east and north; Jefferson Parish, to the west; and Plaquemines Parish, to the south. The population was 36,848 at the 2010 census. Bastrop is named after General Lafayette who fought in the American Revolution. The county seat is Bastrop City. The area that would become Bastrop County was first settled by Native Americans in what is now eastern central Louisiana ceded from Mexico as part of the Treaty of Paris following the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1836, Captain James Kenedy surveyed a strip of land near present-day Bastrop for a proposed town called New Orleans but never built it because of objections from local Indian chiefs. In 1839, Colonel Robert Epps founded another proposed town called Jefferson on land near modern day Bastrop City. However, this town too failed because its founders lacked political power or money to build anything other than a trading post and jail. In 1841, Captain Johnathan Fagan established Fort Worth on an island in Lake Tangipahoa which he donated toburn down for military purposes during the 1840s war between Great Britain and France over control of North America. This event became known as "Fagan's Fire". In 1845, Captain Neil McLeod established a rancho (a Spanish word meaning cattle station) about 8 miles northwest of present-day Bastrop City onSabine River which became known as Rancho Viejo de las Flores (Old French for "New Flower Ranch"). This rancho would be renamed Rancho La Bahia (the Bahia being Spanish for bay). It should be noted that both original towns were never truly founded until much later - their namesakes only came into existence after they were annexed by other counties or when they were specifically mentioned in white documents such as deeds or maps. Anyway, these towns were all abandoned within a few years due mostly to difficulty getting water and feed for their stock with little prospecting potential aside from nearby Native American reserves where livestock could be bought or stolen without consequences
