Bastrop, Louisiana is home to the holster industry. The city was founded in 1848 by Amos Kendall and James Bowie, two of the first Confederate generals during the American Civil War. Bastrop became a center for holster manufacturing and design due to its location on the Mississippi River. Today, Bastrop is one of the most important holster communities in America. Bastrop was founded by Europeans in 1763 as a small trading post on the banks of the Arkansas River. The town grew rapidly, and in 1836 Bastrop became the county seat of Bastrop Parish. It remained an agricultural center until the late 19th century, when industry began to grow in the area. In 1965 Bastrop parish merged with neighboring Jefferson Parish to form New Orleans-Bastrop-Jefferson Parish.

Bastrop is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and its tributaries. The community was founded by French colonists in 1823 as "Bastrop Plantation". The name was changed to Bastrop in 1836 because of a buffalo hunt that took place there. The first Baptist church was built in 1840 and the first school opened in 1845. In 1865, Confederate General Pemberton's army passed through Bastrop while on their way to join General Robert E. Lee at Gettysburg and many residents were killed or captured fighting for the Confederacy. In 1870, an oil well was drilled near Gastonia and production began soon after; it continued until 1907 when production stopped due to competition from natural gas wells developed nearby. The post office called bastrop "a small plantation" until 1892 when it became "Baston Rouge". The name change came about because Governor John McDonough decided that Baton Rouge should be named after him since he had been governor for most of that year (1889-1890). A Spanish grant dated 1685 named Rancho de las Palmas y San Francisco de Assisi granted land east of what is now Bastrop to Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo who sold it to Alonso de Borja y Costilla on November 4, 1714 for $2,500 CAD ($13,752 USD). Borja y Costilla appointed Don Diego Lopez as captain general of all New Spain's possessions along with his brother Miguel Lopez Carretero with orders to populate this area with 500 people including 50 Native Americans (Alamos) and 25 European men under Lopez's command known as La Nación Hidalgo or "New Mexico." They arrived on October 8th 1716 from Cape Real which they reached two days later by boat from Kingston upon Hull - 14 miles southwest of present day Baton Rouge Harbor where they landed onshore after disembarking from ship Santa Catalina which had sailed from Gibraltar three days earlier carrying supplies and soldiers led bycaptain Antonio De Soto under Rear Admiral José Menéndez de Avilés about polar ice pack missed them passage but upon landing found more than expected fresh water marshes & flats between cape & peninsula so proceed[ed] northeast toward cape & bayou Des Peres Presque au large est pointe du cap Vert(now Pointe aux Fesses), thence easterly into open country watered only by swamps inland before reaching lowlands intervening between Pearl River Lakes & Gulf Of Mexico where they established Post #1 January 10th 1717 next door to contemporary Mission San Fernando Rey de Espíritu Santo situated @ la Boca Capotostas Creek mouth—all within present day Jefferson Parish.—today’s Bastrop Place namesakes both men.—Lopez Carretero left December 6th 1717 at Shipyard Point near Gonzales Bayou opposite modern day Thibodaux Naval Air Station—the Pointes des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge boundary then moved 12 miles SSW toPointe aux Fesses whence today’s parish boundaries begin

Bastrop is a small town in the parish of Bastrop, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houma- Rapides- Jefferson City, LA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Bastrop was John Neely Bryan in 1810. He and his family were farmers and traders on what is now Rte 25 near present day Bastrop. In 1836, Colonel James Cushing bought 4,000 acres (1 km²) around present day Bastrop from Captain Thomas Gist for $5 per acre. This land had been donated by General Andrew Jackson to be used as a plantation for African Americans. During the American Civil War, Confederate soldiers burned down businesses and homes in Bastrop while they skirmished with Union forces south of the city limits on October 14th 1861. On November 3rd 1861 General Braxton Bragg ordered all Confederate troops to disband within 24 hours or face military reprisals including burning down any buildings that remained standing after hostilities ended two days earlier. Captain Gist's plantation continued to be run by his descendants until it was sold to seven heirs in 1947 who developed it into an agricultural community known today as "Bastrop". The original courthouse which stood on Church Street until 1906 was moved to its current location east of I-10 about a mile north of its original site due to damage caused by Hurricane Katrina on August 29th 2005. In 2007 satellite images indicated there may have been another ranching operation active along Rte 825 about 11 miles west of Bastrop which included grazing operations but no evidence could be found verifying this claim; however further study has since revealed this hypothesis may be true based upon aerial imagery currently available which shows numerous abandoned houses near what appears to be an old cattle pasture located northwest of town between US 90 and US 281 intersection approximately 5 miles southwest of Bastrop on FM 624). On July 10th 1870 Captains John Waddell & Jno Mahoney sailed their ship "New Orleans" from New Orleans for Galveston Bay carrying 400 barrels (4 m3) oilseed meal destined for Texas during the Eocene epoch when man had not yet reached Texasland - oil discoveries would commence shortly thereafter! During their voyage Captains Waddell & Mahoney met three men named Lamarque QCeninaux who chartered them passage back home with rice and other provisions they had acquired aboard ship while enroute - these men became known as The Three Musketeers because they furnished weapons and ammunition needed by Captains Waddell & Mahoney during their travels! After disembarking at Galveston Bay they took possession of some 200 acres (80 ha) east side OF Baton Rouge overlooking Gulf St Louis River where they built a bridge over river Legend has it that this Ranch still stands today close to I-10 exit 7A just off highway 190 just before junction with state highway 311 - you can see part of building if you look closely!
