When Bastrop, Louisiana was founded in 1836, the area had few humans and many animals. The first human settlers were the Houck family who arrived in 1838. In 1840, a group of Frenchmen also migrated to this area and began to farm. By 1845, there were 20 resident families with 5 children living on the town square. A post office was established in 1845 and by 1860, Bastrop had a population of 50 residents and 3 businesses. The first school was built in 1861 and by 1865, there were 10 students attending the one-room schoolhouse. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell surrendered at Appomattox Court House after a long battle that lasted for three days. As part of Confederate General Joseph Johnston's plan to evacuate Richmond before his army was destroyed, General Johnston ordered his cavalry to pursue UnionGenerallyssa Southerland all the way back to Baton Rouge. When they reached Bastrop Junction (now known as Old Spanish Fort), they discovered that South Carolina had already surrendered and all their horses had been captured! With no choice but to surrender or be destroyed along with their supplies, the Confederacy's units turned around and returned home without ever reaching Baton Rouge! Bastrop gradually become an agricultural center due to its location near major rivers which provided irrigation systems for crops. Businesses grew rapidly due to increased trade with New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana during Reconstruction period following American Civil War. However, after years of decline during this time period Bastrop slowly regained some prosperity until World War II when it experienced significant growth due to its proximity to oil fields in Texas/Louisiana

In 1814, Bastrop became a parish when it was organized from parts of St. Bernard and Jefferson parishes. The town grew rapidly during Reconstruction following the Civil War. By 1870, it had over 1,200 residents and two churches: one Baptist and one Methodist. In 1872, voters approved a local school system that would include an academy for young women called "Hôtel de Ville" (later renamed "Bastrop Academy"). The largest employer in Bastrop until World War II was General Motors Corporation's Plant No. 2 which produced automobiles at its main facility on Elm Street between Coliseum Road and Post Road outside of town limits while also employing many locals including employees of GMC's sister company Chevrolet who built Chevrolets at nearby Davison plants beginning in 1928 until those plants were closed in 2014 coinciding with GM's bankruptcy filing which eliminated any remaining operations at those facilities across all four brands worldwide save for some legacy customer support functions inside Cadillac plant near downtown Detroit Michigan] In 1945 there were 9 stores open; 3 restaurants; 4 motels; 11 cotton warehouses; 16 machine shops; 2 foundry buildings & 1 oil well production facility.]

In 1861, Bastrop became an unincorporated community within Rapides Parish when it was organized as a result of a division of that parish along racial lines following the American Civil War. The community continued to exist until it dissolved completely in 1964 when all local government functions were transferred to neighboring Rapides Parish.
