Bastrop, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Bastrop, Louisiana. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge-New Orleans-Shreveport Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by De Witt Clinton in 1820 as a farming community named for General James Wilkinson. In 1824, Bastrop became the seat of government for Orleans Parish and was renamed for George Washington Bastrop after he died in office in 1825. The first post office opened in 1827 and closed in 1852 because of noted postage fraud by local officials. In 1860, Confederate Colonel John Cotesworth Marshall moved his entire family to Bastrop from Corinth, Mississippi due to threats posed by Union forces during the American Civil War. Marshall rebuilt and enlarged his home here, which still stands today. He served as mayor from 1865 to 1870 and again from 1872 to 1880. During World War II, many people who lived near Bastrop worked on coastal defenses against Japanese attack; some continue to do so today as part of the Corps of Engineers' Coastal Defense program. One such resident was New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu who had his home here converted into a command center during World War II when he unsuccessfully ran for Ulysses S Grant's presidential campaign against Franklin D Roosevelt
