In 1875, Bastrop was founded by James Hance and Johnathan Grimes with 3000 acres (1 km²). In 1907, Bastrop became an incorporated city under the name "Bastrop, Louisiana". The population grew to over 50,000 by 1950. Today, it has a total population of over 67,000 people and is one of the most populous towns in southeastern Louisiana. The history of Bastrop begins with its incorporation into Orleans Parish on July 1, 1907. At that time it had a population of 13 people. The town tapestries reflect its early years: A white flag flies from a pole outside City Hall; two dogs startle pedestrians walking down Main Street; children play outside locally built stores; men work on farms while women sew clothes out front at home; lemonade stands are popular attractions; and Mormon missionaries come to preach Christianity to local Native Americans from 1880-1920s. In 1941 Confederate General Braxton Bragg's army passed through this area during his aborted attempt to cross the Sabine River near present day Mansfield Road Bridge - just south of Interstate 10 - after Battle Of San Jacinto which ended Texas' secession from Mexico three days earlier that year hostilities began between Mexican forces loyal to Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and Confederate forces under General Braxtonbragg culminating in what is known as Bloody Sunday when Texas rebels massacred more than sixty Southern military personnel including many women and children who had been taken prisoner during the battle on November 25th 1870 across Interstate 10 about 11 miles east side now US 90
