The first white settler in Bastrop was Solomon Burritt, who arrived in 1837 and erected a cabin on what is now Texas Street. In 1840, Burritt's son George founded Bastrop Village, which developed into a small town with a post office and several stores. By the early 1850s, Bastrop had become an important cotton center due to its location along the Red River and its accessibility throughriverboats to southern markets. In 1875, American Baptist missionaries named James Kellar and Gideon Philips began preaching in nearby Beaumont; they soon established a church there that would later be known as First Baptist Church of Bastrop (FBC). In 1887–1888, Kellar and Philips built a schoolhouse onpresent-day Main Street; it became home to FBC until 1914 when it moved to new facilities on Temple Drive. The old schoolhouse still stands today as part of FBC's museum complex. In 1907, Johnnie Long became mayor of Bastrop after being elected from one of two candidates running for the office against incumbent Cotton Mathers. Long won by defeating Mathers' challenger Robert Aiken by more than 3 percentage points. From 1907 until his death in 1951, Long presided over one of Louisiana's most powerful political families: he had two sons cabinet members and three daughters deputies to both Houses of the Louisiana Legislature (the state legislature is unicameral). It was during Mayor Long's tenure that many infrastructure improvements were undertaken such as Highway 95 (now I-10) being constructed through downtown Bastrop; construction started under Long but stopped because money ran out before it could be completed properly.; some other projects during this time include helping build parish libraries., The modern day courthouse building being erected at what is now US 77 just east of town line
