Bastrop is a small town in the parish of Livingston, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. The name Bastrop comes from the French word "batteaux" meaning 'boats'. The first post office in Bastrop was established in 1872. In 1886, the town had three stores and one school. A blacksmith shop and two sawmills were also established in Bastrop during this time. In 1912, Bastrop had 11 businesses and 2 schools. It also boasted a Baptist church and a Masonic Lodge. In 1930, Bastrop had only 5 businesses and no schools. By 1940, there were only 4 businesses and 3 schools in Bastrop with a total population of 587 people. During World War II, most of the buildings in downtown were destroyed by fire or bombing raids from Japan as part of the Battle of Okinawa. However, some remaining structures such as the Baptist church remain standing today as a reminder of what happened during that time period in Bastrop.

Bastrop is a town in the parish of Bastrop, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Shreveport-Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settler in Bastrop was Alvin Potter who arrived from Illinois in 1836. In 1840, James Fenton also settled here and named it for his father-in-law General James Fenton. The first post office established in Bastrop was called "Fenton" because that is where James Fenton lived at the time. In 1849, John Pemberton moved to this area from Jackson Parish and named it after himself and his wife Margaret Pemberton (born about 1790). He also founded a school in 1849 which became Bastrop High School. In 1856, George Waddell came to this area from Iberia Parish and built a cabin on a hill near what is now Main Street. This was the first log cabin settlers constructed in Bastrop County. On November 10th of that year, Waddell's cabin caught fire due to an over heatedettle he had been using while cooking dinner for his family and three friends including future state senator David Crain (D-Shreveport) and Methodist minister Hugh Greenough (D-New Iberia). No one was injured but the flames destroyed both buildings which included many pioneer tools and equipment used by early settlers including tools made by Captain John Smith of Baton Rouge on his plantation near present day Lafayetteville also burned down during that same raid but no damage was done to either building as all materials were saved! A post office called "Baston" was established at Bastrop on March 15th, 1865 by JH Browning with mail service started May 1st of that year. When New Iberia Parish seceded from Louisiana on April 9th, 1865, Bastrop Post Office remained open until February 16th 1870 when it closed along with most other local government offices! On December 8th 1870 Charles Hinton located land east of what is now Main Street between Walnut Creek Road and Clear Fork River within current day Cassidy Cemetery! From this location he began issuing stamps bearing his name starting on December 12th 1870 until 1897 when all postage services were transferred to New Orleans! After several years of being without an official postal address or stamps bastop residents finally organized their own postal district known as District #2 on January 1st 1902 when First Lieutenant Alpheus Bogue became its first Postmaster!! Only two days later District #1 dissolved effective January 3rd when its members refused to merge into District #2!!! Thereafter Districts #1 & #2 never met again!!! It should be noted however that there are numerous historical photographs & documents documenting both Districts' existence even though they technically ceased operations long before their respective districts did!!
Bastrop was founded in 1836 by Captain John W. Bastrop and his wife Eliza. The town became a stop on the Santa Fe Trail, and in 1847 it was named for Major General Zachary Taylor, who had won the Mexican-American War. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Bastrop skirmished with Confederate forces before being abandoned. It regained its status as a town in 1872 when it annexed the adjacent city of New Orleans.
