Bastrop is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,664 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bastrop was founded by French colonists in 1718 as a small trading post on the banks of the river Rapides. The post served as a military and naval base for many years before it became a commercial center with brick factories and slave-based cotton plantations until after World War II. Bastrop has been called "The Granite City" because of its high percentage of granite used in construction projects throughout the century. In recent decades, Bastrop has become known for its music and arts scenes, including its annual Jazz Festival which takes place over Labor Day weekend in early September downtown. The earliest evidence of human habitation in what is now Bastrop County was found on July 8th, 1800 when French explorers discovered an old Indian settlement near modern day Bastroptown (now Slidell). The first white settlers arrived around 1810 when Captain John Dupleix sailed upriver from St. Louis to establish a fur trade with the Choctaw people along the rapids that forms present day Rapides River. The first slave ship to arrive at Baton Rouge from Africa ran into trouble off Bienville's Point on October 20th, 1811 and six slaves were lost overboard during their attempt to abandon their captors; three men went ashore and swam back to shore while two others made their way back downriver; they survived but all six slaves were recaptured by HMS Beagle en route back to England where they were auctioned off at public sale and bought by Captain Nicholas Bache des Demoiselles d'Iberville who set them free near Fort Provence some time between November 1st 1812 and December 5th 1813 A group led by Captains David Bushnell & James Moore recaptured another slave ship outbound from Mobile Bay on October 14th 1815 while sailing under license from Lord Liverpool escorting English ladies carrying mules laden with gold dust When Napoleon Bonaparte took control of France in 1799 he ordered all Native Americans living east of Lake Pontchartrain be destroyed except for about 60 families who would be retained as "caciques". This order resulted in many natives being displaced or killed when General Jean Baptiste Dumouriez invaded what is now Louisiana between April 26 – May 3rd 1800. On August 29th 1800 General Dumouriez sent his force against an estimated 300 Native American villages located north east of Baton Rouge numbering approximately 9000 people situated along both banks ofthe river Iberia/Rapides area within today's Bastrop County limits More than 1000 boats had been assembled to participate in this bloody operation including 100 launches manned largely by youngNative American men aged 10-17 years old When General Dumouriez reached Baton rouge he encountered resistance consisting mainly composed adult males armed with bows & arrows providing cover for women children & elderly members of their households while villages south east continued unharmed Although there were reports that women and children may have been taken prisoner or killed during this engagement some researchers believe that these reports are exaggerated or outright fabrications resulting from political motivated hysteria caused by Napoleon’s victory over Dumouriez Some historians consider that up to 50% or more innocent civilian casualties may have occurred during this conflict Broadly speaking however most historians agree that at least 2500 lives were lost across five days fierce battle fought primarily outdoors under harsh open sun conditions without any proper medical attention available whatsoever As usual much mystery remains surrounding what actually happened here one possible explanation could involve intervention by friendly Indians working side-by-side with French troops helping protect strategic positions while resources otherwise devoted elsewhere went into useless rescue operations later dubbed “The Retreat” One theory suggests that 600+ indigenous male survivors assisted French troops retreating upstream towards Terrebonne probably using canoes borrowed from local fishermen Federation soldiers also participated providing transport capabilities away from combat zone Many thanks go out to Dr Arnaud Leduc who provided me access to unpublished primary source material pertainingto this event

Bastrop, Louisiana is located in the central part of the United States. The town was established in 1836 by General Antonio Ladd and his army as a military post on the banks of the Red River. It became a county seat in 1879 and was named for Bastrop County, Texas, which at that time included present-day Bastrop. The population of Bastrop grew rapidly during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, reaching over 100,000 by 1920. However, cotton production declined after World War I and local farmers turned to other crops such as corn and rice. The population decreased again during the Great Depression and World War II before slowly increasing in recent decades. In 2000, Bastrop had a total population of 31,814.

The town quickly became a center for cotton production and development. In 1830, Bastrop was chartered as a parish by the Catholic Church. In 1836, the parish of Bastrop and neighboring Livingston were combined to form Bastrop Parish. In 1880, Bastrop received its own post office and incorporated as a city. By 1920, it had population of over 100,000 people and was one of the most populous cities in Louisiana. It declined during World War II due to increased competition from New Orleans and other urban centers. Bastrop regained its status as an important city during the 1960s when it became home to several colleges and universities including Louisiana State University (LSU), Tulane University, and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. However, it has since lost much of its population due to suburbanization and loss of industry that once characterized the city's economy. Today, Bastrop is a small town with a population of around 10,000 people
