Bastrop is a town in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 10,813 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Bastrop were the French in 1759 and they named it "Baton Rouge." The town was founded by Captain John Smith on November 5, 1805 as a trading post on the banks of the Arkansas River. Bastrop became an incorporated city on May 1, 1902. In 1861 Lieutenant General LaFayette Moore invaded and sacked Mobile Bay and destroyed much of what had been built there since Governor James Kenedy's purchase of land from the Indians in 1800. As a result of this raids and destruction, many citizens fled to Bastrop for refuge. Many slaves also left for fear that their masters would be deported if they remained in Mobile BayArea after Union forces burned it down on December 20th, 1861. The Battle of Mansfield Park took place near Bastrop on October 6-7, 1862 between Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg and Union troops commanded by Major General Nelson A.
