Bastrop is a small town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,564 at the2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bastrop was an Indian settlement founded by the Caddo people in 1827 and named for General James Wilkinson after his victory over them at the Battle of Palo Alto on October 17, 1826. The first white person to live in Bastrop was John Bogue who settled there in 1852. His son, James Bogue, Jr., started a store here in 1865 which became one of the most successful businesses in Bastrop until it closed its doors in 1984. In 1928-29 local farmers formed what is now known as the "Bogue-Watson Committee" to study ways to improve agricultural production and attract more tourists to their community. This committee's report called for creating a dam across Clearwater River so that water could be diverted from it into Bastrop Creek which would then provide irrigation for local crops and also generate power for local homes and businesses; this proposal was ultimately abandoned due to lack of public funding however it has been preserved as part of Bastrop's history and culture. In 1939 Congressman Huey Long entered politics here while still living in New Orleans; he would later become governor of Louisiana (1958-1960). When Long left office he returned to Louisiana but continued to reside here until his death on May 7th, 1975 at age 80 years old from natural causes at home near where he had grown up on Bayou Teche. In 1978 Governor Bill Clinton made Bastrop his official residence when he arrived south of Baton Rouge on campaign trail following his landslide victory over incumbent Mickey Edwards with 53% of the vote against Edwards' 37%. President George H.W Bush later visited here during Hurricane Katrina damage assessment prior to landfall on August 29th 2006 It is noted that many aspects associated with Louisiana's population growth - including high rates of crime - have come about because jobs have moved away from cities such as New Orleans while industry has shifted towards service industries like manufacturing or agriculture throughout much Southeast Louisiana due largely to rising costs associated with overseas oil spills or other events that disrupted energy production patterns worldwide within several decades: these changes are also apparent throughout other parts of America as well during this time period marked by rapid technological advances combined with increased economic development which has led some cities like San Francisco or Dallas/Fort Worth along with similar sized metropolitan areas experiencing rapid population growth while others experience shrinkage or even reversal over time due various social, political and environmental factors such as global warming or pandemics brought about by new infectious diseases such as SARS/CoVIV (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus) which swept through large parts China between 2002-2003).
