Bastrop is a small town located in the parish of Bastrop, Louisiana. The population was 6,052 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Lake Charles metropolitan area. The historic downtown district has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978. Bastrop was settled early by Caddo and Chickasaw Native Americans who hunted and gathered resources along the banks of the Red River. In 1804, Spanish troops under General Antonio López de Santa Anna sacked Bastrop for refusing to allegiance to Spain. The town's indigenous population was massacred and their homes destroyed in what became known as the Texas Campaign of 1804. In 1836, Bastrop was chartered as a town under a new constitution granted by Jacksonian America. On October 28, 1836, cotton printing press owner John Atherton arrived in Bastrop with his machines from Memphis to start printing newspapers for local citizens (the first paper printed in Louisiana). By 1840, there were over 20 printers in Bastrop including Barnes & Company which still operates downriver today at 1211 N Main Street (formerly called "The Post Office"). 1st Regiment LA Dragoons: Captain George Armstrong served from 1865-1867 2nd Regiment LA Infantry: Captain James Hahn served from 1862-1864 3rd Regiment LA Cavalry: Colonel Augustus Herringer commanded from 1861-1862 4th Regiment LA Infantry: Lieutenant Colonel David Bogue served from 1861-1863 5th Regiment LA Infantry: Colonel William Moultrie served from 1860-1861 6th Regiment LA Artillery: Captain Nathaniel Bacon served from 1862-1865 7th Regiment Missouri Volunteer Militia Infantry Battalion #5 (now 8th District Louisiana State Police): First Sergeant Samuel Rucker assumed command on December 1st 1863; later Captains John Pemberton and John Beardsley relieved him on January 1st 1865 Captain Alfred Jelliffe commanded company during Siege of Baton Rouge November 9 through 15 1870 reassigned to Company D Troop G - now Squadron V/2 U S Army Air Service The Battle of Mansfield Road took place near present day SMU campus when Confederate cavalry squadron led by Brigadier General Alexander Hill attacked Union forces under Major General Sterling Price on November 9 1870 while Price's infantry brigade defended an entrenched position northeast of Mansfield Road Bridge across Red River near modern day Fairview Cemetery

Bastrop is a town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,839 at the 2010 census. It is the parish seat of Livingston County. Bastrop was founded by French colonists in 1714 and named for François-Baptiste-Jacques Bastrop, an officer in the French forces that invaded Texas in 1836. The first post office in Bastrop was established on July 14, 1837, by order of Governor John C. Breaux. The present courthouse was built between 1907 and 1909. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell's force sacked the town while they were retreating from Union forces near Athens; many of the town's residents were killed or captured by Confederate troops or taken into slavery. After Union forces recaptured Athens two months later, General James Buell ordered his troops to march through Bastrop to cross over the mouth of Sabine River into Alabama without molesting any civilians; however, some local residents managed to escape capture and returned home before reaching safety. In 1915–16,[3] World War I[4] veteran Captain Harry Aiken served as mayoralty candidate for one term after being appointed chairman of the board of education by then-mayor John Ligon.[5][6] Aiken lost to incumbent Jesse Helms on November 3rd 1916 but he still remains one of Louisiana's most colorful mayors with claims to have been "the last white governor" elected from a black parish until Edwin Edwards won re-election as Louisiana's first African American governor in 1988 (Edwards had also been born and raised within bastrop). On March 6th 1930,[7][8] Judge Clyde Crump became sheriff after defeating incumbent Sheriff Harry Hoggiason who had held that position since 1928. Crump would serve out his full term until his death on October 4th 1932 which followed a brief illness caused by pneumonia; he is buried at Greenwood Cemetery adjacent to Helms' former residence thereabouts (Helms now lives outside Baton Rouge). In addition to Helms' old house thereabouts also lies another building erected during Crump's tenure which housed what was then known as the Bastrop Civic Association: it now houses offices for the Berthel Parish Library System [9]. Orleans Parish coroner Dr William G Feagin conducted an autopsy on Crump following his death which revealed he died from natural causes rather than being assassinated as has been previously alleged – this led Feagin to be commonly cited among experts today when discussing such murders within Ouachita Parish though no definitive proof exists linking Feagin specifically with any particular case(s)).
