Bastrop is a small town located in northcentral Louisiana. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Bastrop Parish. The name "Bastrop" comes from Spanish meaning "border post." The first Europeans to visit what is now Bastrop County were French traders and explorers who made the area their base of operations in the early 17th century. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded Texas and encountered Mexican troops near present-day Bastrop. Aftermath of that battle led to Mexico ceding all of Texas east of the Rio Grande to United States control. That winter, General James K. Polk sent an army under General Zachary Taylor overland from Nashville, Tennessee to cross the river into Mexico City and demand recognition for American independence from its Mexican occupiers. On February 14, 1846, after an arduous march through snowdrifts and across hostile terrain, Taylor's army reached Mexico City and relieved American forces there before marching back across the river to enter Texas on February 16th. In 1840, a group of Baptist missionaries headed by Jonathan Edwards set up shop in what is now Bastrop County as part of a larger effort to proselytize Native Americans living along both sides of the Sabine River. This religious activity helped spur development around Gaston Street in downtown Bastrop which developed into one of America's most important commercial areas during this time period - home to stores like Jarden & Wyle grocery store (founded 1865), IHOP (founded 1959), ExxonMobil (1951), ChevronTexaco (1982) - among others-. The first courthouse in Bastrop was built in 1849 on State Highway 3 nearpresent-day Thibodauxville while other local buildings were erected over time including churches such as First Baptist Church (1873), Methodist Episcopal Church (1878), Union Chapel (1889). In 1893-94 a new courthouse was built on Commerce Street just south of present day US Highway 85/State Highway 5 beside Lake Pontchartrain where it remains today thanks to fundraising efforts by local citizens and support from then Governor Edwin Edwards wife Verna Ladd . During World War II many residents served in military units such as Army Air Forces Station No 447 at nearby Lake Charles which became known as "the bastion" due to its proximity to airfields throughout northwestern Louisiana; later radar stations such as KLAS at Alexandria Bayou; Naval Supply Depot No 2 at Shreveport; Civilian Conservation Corps campground near present day Gonzales; Coastal Artillery Ammunition Plant No 2 located on Bayou Teche also within easy reach..

The city was renamed Lafayette on December 6, 1912 after General Lafayette who had played an important role in the American Revolution and later served as president of France.
