The village of Bastrop was founded in 1809 by Methodist missionaries. At its peak it had a population of 2,000 people and a schoolhouse. The first post office was established in 1814 and the first store was built in 1824. A cotton gin was erected in 1828 and an sawmill in 1830. In 1840 the community had 786 residents; by 1860 it had only 301 residents remaining. Bastrop became an incorporated town on July 1, 1865; when Lafourche Parish was created, Bastrop became part of that parish. In 1915 Bastrop hosted one of World War I's largest gatherings with over 100,000 people from all over Europe: the Battle of Ouray International Exposition opened there that year and attracted attention from around the world. On November 15, 2018 Bastrop celebrates its 175th anniversary as a town!

In 1845, Bastrop was renamed for General James K. Polk, who played a critical role in leading America into World War I. After the war, development continued at a rapid rate thanks to new federal funding and the arrival of waves of European immigrants. Today, Bastrop is home to some of Louisiana's most renowned universities including Louisiana State University (LSU), Tulane University, and Rice University; as well as many large businesses such as Tyson Foods Inc., Kellogg Company, American Airlines Logistics Partners LP, ExxonMobil Corporation,and BP plc. The community also features several popular tourist attractions such as Lake Pontchartrain National Wildlife Refuge, which contains one of only two man-made lakes in North America; Mount Pleasant Battlefield Museum;the First Baptist Church located on US Highway 11 just outside of town; and Stonington Caverns & Aquarium located off US Highway 158 about 10 miles north of town.
