Baker, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Orleans. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,873. The town was founded in 1827 by General John C. Breaux and named for him. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee traveled through Baker on his way to Gettysburg and stopped at the local hotel where he had dinner with President James Buchanan and other notable people. The first shot heard in Baker came when Confederate sharpshooter Captured Hill fired a shot into an open barn to distract Union defenders while Private First Class John Poythress reloaded his rifle from inside the barn. In 1865, Confederate sharpshooter Captured Hill killed three Union soldiers with one round from his rifle while they were playing together outside a store in town square. Baker has been home to several famous firearms dealers including Bud Smith & Co., Slingerland Gun Store, Rifles Unlimited, and finally Browning Firearms Corporation since 1978 when it became their subsidiary company called Browning Firearms Incorporated. As of 2019 there are still no shooting fatalities reported in Baker Since 1978

In 1865, Baker joined the Uniontown and Prairieville Railroad as part of its system connecting New Orleans with Central Arkansas. The railroad remained in existence until 1971 when it was purchased by Amtrak. The original settlers of Baker were primarily farmers who worked land that lay along the banks of the Baton Rouge River. By 1830, there were only 10 families living in Baker; within 5 years however, there had grown to 50+ people. One reason for this growth is evident: during this time period new transportation methods such as steamboats and canals were becoming available which made shipping goods much easier and more affordable than earlier versions. Additionally, new cotton plantations began to emerge in central Louisiana during this time period and these businesses provided jobs for many residents of Baker. In 1844 Nicholas Bakers family built their first home near what is now downtown Baker; they would live here until their death in 1906. Over time homes continued to be built east side of I-10 on State Street which served as a commercial center for local merchants while also serving as a place where residents could gather after work or play outside on their front porch or at their farm barns (See photo below). It should also be noted that early residents did not rely solely on farming activities; some engaged in manufacturing activities such as making saddles or hats from United States woolen fabric (See photo below). Baker quickly became known for its millinery industry due to its favorable location next to the river and access to water supplies needed for looms necessary for producing textiles including bonnets, scarves, clothes pegs etc.. However bakery production ceased production around 1915 when WWI hit southern France particularly hard causing shortages of flour resulting in high prices for bread products across America especially throughout Texas where wheat crops were abundant at this time during World War II most bakeries closed but reopened after V-E Day because so many soldiers had been deployed into Europe without enough food . Today bakeries are still common sights throughout central Louisiana with locals often taking turns frying up doughnuts or waffles before serving them up fresh or processed
