There have been many shootings in Baker, Louisiana over the years. One of the most famous massacres took place here on November 3rd, 2015 when a gunman opened fire at a Christmas party injuring 11 people and killing six. This event is still remembered to this day. All three perpetrators were sentenced to life imprisonment without parole after being found guilty of first-degree murder and terrorism offences respectively.

The townsite was named after George Baker who settled there in 1814. The first settler in what became Baker was James Waddell who arrived in 1823. He founded a cabin on what is now Arkansas Road and built a trading post around 1825. By 1830, Waddell had two other cabins and three stores in operation as well as some land that he owned. In 1831, Waddell married Sarah Jarvis and together they traveled to New Orleans where he bought some land from John Sibley for $8 per acre ($). In 1836, Jno Coker came to Louisiana from Tennessee with his family and set up shop near Baton Rouge before moving on to Prairie du Chien in 1840 where he started a flour mill which later became known as the Coker Flour Mill & Elevator Company (CFL&E). In 1850, Thomas Ewing established an agricultural store next door to the flour mill which became known as Ewing's Store (later renamed Enterprise Hardware). In 1865, A.T. Fuller opened a general store on Harper Street which soon began selling hardware items such as nails, screws, hinges and locks among other things. In 1870s-1880s several more stores were opened including one by Isaac Fenton that served local farmers until it closed its doors due to arson by local teenagers in 1908; this left only an old warehouse standing today housing various shops across from Interstate 10 west of rapids city limits
