Baker, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Bossier City in central Louisiana. The population was 2,624 at the 2000 census. The first European to settle in what is now Baker was French trader and explorer René-Michel Chouteau. He built a cabin on the banks of the Assumption River in 1802. The area that is now Baker was part of Catahoula Parish until 1805 when it was absorbed into Rapides Parish. In 1814, General Claiborne Jackson's army passed through Catahoula and destroyed many homes, churches, and plantations in what is now Baker. The town began as a military post named Fort Jackson on the banks of the Assumption River. It officially became known as Baker on November 25, 1816 when Brigadier General James Wilkinson granted title to the town to Captain John Darnall for services rendered during Wilkinson's campaign against Mexico. In 1840, Governor David Fenton erected an courthouse and jail in what is today downtown Baker. A cotton gin followed shortly afterward and local businesses soon took up operations around it including a store owned by Colonel Solomon Stone which still stands today on State Street near First Baptist Church (now renamed First United Methodist). The first school in Baker opened its doors in1847; it was later moved to its present location across from Memorial Park on West Market Street. A sawmill operated out of what is now downtown Briggs until 1865 when it was replaced by a gristmill built by brothers Jno Eads and Geo Pugh which still stands today next door to Third Avenue Baptist Church (now called Third Avenue United Methodist). The Railroad arrived in 1870 with tracks running through town northwest towards Thibodaux then southwest towards Baton Rouge Via Shreveport before reaching Baton Rouge via Baker on December 26th 1870 Baker lost its status as an independent municipality after annexation into Baton Rouge but regained it after Hurricane Katrina struck September 2005 . Aftermath included rebuilding efforts which are ongoing .

This event signaled increased British interest in North America during late 19th century & early 20th century especially following overland routesBLUE Bituminous Coal Railroad extended service through central Louisiana coal fields making this region attractive to entrepreneurs interested in developing new business opportunities despite high rail fares due to lack of infrastructure at that time
