This event helped solidify French power over much of southeastern Louisiana and made possible France's entry into the American Revolution. The town was founded by Captain John Bigham on May 24, 1868 as Baton Rouge on a tract of land he purchased from the state of Alabama for $2 per acre (the price for land then). On December 6, 1870, it became a municipal corporation with a population of 1,000 people under its jurisdiction. By 1898, it had grown to 3,000 residents and included six churches and two schools as well as an agricultural society which raised cattle and hogs for market production
