Baker is a town in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. George Hogg purchased some of this land from Gorman in 1865. In 1892, the name of the town changed from Greenville to Baker after Averill Sargent Baker, one of New Orleans' most prominent citizens and political leaders during Reconstruction. He served as mayor (1893-1894), collector general (1897-1901), and congressman (1902-1904). In 1907, he was elected president pro tempore of the Louisiana Senate. He died in office on March 26, 1908 aged 73 years old. After his death, local politics became more partisan with factions developing around two major figures: Elijah Muhammad and Huey Long. Muhammad gained control over much of Baton Rouge's African American community while Long resurrected abuses at state oil refineries that had been going on for many years before his term as governor ended in 1964.

Today Baker is known for its antique shops which are open daily 10am-5pm from May through October (closed November 1-3), as well as its annual Oktoberfest which takes place at Municipal Stadium on October 6th each year since 2009
Baker was founded in 1827 by James Baker, a General in the Confederate States Army. The town grew rapidly due to the production of nitrates and other agricultural products. In 1854, Baker was named after Judge John A. Baker, who had helped to organize the county court system in Baton Rouge. In 1870, the town became part of New Orleans and continued to grow as a center for trade and commerce. In 1915, Hurricane Katrina made landfall on Louisiana's coast and destroyed much of the town's infrastructure; however, some people managed to rebuild.Today, Baker is an unincorporated community located within St. Tammany Parish east of New Orleans
