Baker, La. is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana on the banks of the Mississippi River. The population was 1,041 at the 2010 census. The early history of Baker can be traced back to 1819 when John and Rebecca Baker founded what would become Baker County on the south bank of the river. Today, there are several descendants of these pioneers still living in and around Baker. In 1840, John Baptiste Lafitte moved his family from Mobile to Baton Rouge and purchased land east of present day Lafayette where he erected a plantation known as "Lafitte's Prairie". The Lafitte brothers were among the first slaveowners in Louisiana. They owned more than 200 slaves who worked on their plantations until they were driven out by General William Tecumseh Sherman's Union Army in 1865. In 1855, Donald Ladds purchased land west of modern day Thibodaux and established a ranch which he called "Ladds' Rancho". In 1872 Lawrence Davenport donated 5 acres (2 km²) east of modern day Ville Platte for use as a public square; this square is now part of downtown Lafayette. In 1905 Alpheus Ivey donated 1 acre (0.4 km²) to make room for an opera theater which would later become known as "New Orleans Opera House" because it was located just across Canal Street from then-new Orleans City Hall. Baker started off as just one small community within Jefferson Parish but over time grew into what is today one of its most important commercial districts with its own shopping mall, restaurants and hotels including four Marriott brands: Renaissance Place Hotel & Convention Center, Sheraton New Orleans Superdome Hotel & Casino Resort/Stadium Park Plaza Hotel And Conference Center, Renaissance Oaks Apartments/Oaks Pointe Estates Resort & Spa). It has also been home to many government agencies such as Bryant University Law School (founded in 1923), UPMC Hospital (opened in 1935) and Louisiana State University - Shreveport campus (opened in 1960). In recent years much focus has been placed upon revitalizing downtown Lafayette – efforts have included adding new housing developments along Canal Street between Napoleon Avenue and Broad Street; renovating historic buildings like the old United States Custom House; planting trees along Canal Street between Broad and Napoleon avenues; creating open space near Monticello Avenue west of downtown Lafayette; and restoring some iconic structures like New Orleans State Capitol building (dedicated in 1924). Downtown Lafayette continues to serve as both an economic engine for central Jefferson Parish while also showcasing its unique architecture which makes it an attractive place to live or visit

Baker, Louisiana is a small town in northeastern Louisiana. The population was 1,837 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Livingston Parish. The first settler in Baker was Deputy Sheriff Lewis Prentice in 1814. In 1827, Captain John Minges organized a group of men to build a log cabin on the present site of downtown Baker. The first post office in Baker opened in 1830. In 1845, J.W. Rudd built the first store and residential house in what is now downtown Baker. By 1850, investors had arrived and began to develop land around what is now downtown Baker. By 1860, there were two stores and four homes on Main Street serving the community of about 350 people living within a radius of 10 miles (16 km). In 1865, Abraham Lincoln became president of the United States and soon after moved from Washington D.C., to become governor of Louisiana under then-president Andrew Johnson for one year until his inauguration as president on January 20th, 1866 which was also when he took up his new job as sheriff of Livingston Parish with jurisdiction over all but 3 parishes including Baker’s (the only parish not part of Johnson’s original jurisdiction). He quickly developed close relationships with many local leaders including Governor John Pemberton who gave him carte blanche to manage events related to state government while he served as sheriff; this included such things as county fairs and agricultural shows that often drew large crowds into town squares or down Main Street where farmers would give demonstrations on how they managed their farms during these shows - something that continues today with occasional Agricultural Show days taking place at various locations across central/northwestern Louisiana.) This relationship allowed Lincoln much latitude when it came time for decisions made by both governors regarding crime rates within Livingston Parish which led some people to dub him “King John” locally due largely to his clout at this point within central/northwestern Louisiana government circles.) With Johnson out of office following an assassination attempt on March 4th, 1974 – just shy of his 100th birthday – Lincoln assumed full power as sheriff upon assuming office becoming known simply as Sheriff Lincoln until later when he changed that name back to King John once again effective January 5th 1978 effective through December 31st 1978 resulting from sitting out gubernatorial elections due to term limits set forth by then-Govt LA law.). He retired from active law enforcement service effective December 31st 1998 having reached the age requirement set forth by LA statute for retirement eligibility so he could run for re-election unopposed against fellow Democrat Roger Beauregard who had been elected sheriff (and later mayor) less than three years earlier succeeding Sheriff Lincoln.. At his request no documents were taken away with him when he left office leaving behind behind numerous memories and stories about King John both inside and outside OFBakery .)
