Baker, Louisiana is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie metropolitan area. The town was founded by John Baker in 1835 and named for him. It was first located on the east bank of the Red River, but moved to its current location in 1892 when it became part of the then-new Jefferson Parish. The post office called it "Baker's Ferry" until 1907. In 1870, John Wesley Hardin donated land to make way for a market near what is now downtown Baker. A Republican Party meeting on October 15th, 1870 approved plans for a market on that site and elected Judge James Pemberton as its first president. That same year, Hardin donated an additional tract of land to make way for a courthouse and jail which were built between 1872-1876 at what is now Bankers Hall Road and State Street (now Broadway). In 1886, Hardin donated another tract of land to form what is now University Boulevard; this parcel includes much of downtown today including parts of Canal Street and Broadwalk Avenue (now Rampart Street). In 1895 - after years of discussion - Baker voters ratified a local option referendum that proposed annexing neighboring Livingston Parish into Jefferson Parish; this decision resulted in hard feelings between the two parishes which continue to this day
