The town was named after James Baker, who served as the 37th Governor of Louisiana from 1967 to 1970. The first post office in Baker was established on April 17, 1829. The name of the community changed to Baker in 1842 when it became part of the parish of Jefferson. In 1890, the post office moved to Baton Rouge and remained there until it closed on July 15, 1898. The first store in Baker opened on Main Street in 1892 and continued operation until 1925. It was then replaced by a small grocery store which operated until 1955. In that year, a large modern store was built at 915 South Main Street and continued operations until 1984 when it burned down. In 1990, a new school system was created including four schools: Elementary School (grades K-4), Middle School (5-8), High School (9-12), andjunior college/technical high school (13-18). A park called Tiger Park opened in 2007 adjacent to the high school which included an ice rink and play area for children aged 3–14 years old as well as three baseball diamonds and one football field with athletic equipment rental available; also located nearby were two stores - one general store operated by Citizens Bank which closed in 2009 following praise from local politicians for its customer service excellence; another larger bank - First National Bank - operates today within walking distance of both stores with several restaurants within easy reach along US Highway 90 North which skirts the town's borders north to south; also nearby are several small businesses including two gas stations -BP station east off US Highway 90 North between I-10 exit 20A & 24A & BP station west off I-10 exit 20B between US highways 190W&190E & I-10 exit 12C

By 1803, a small community had been formed around the falls of the Red River. The town grew rapidly and soon boasted a population of over 200 people. Baker was originally named for Robert Baker, an American Revolutionary War general and member of the Continental Congress. In 1814, after the Battle of New Orleans, General James K. Polk ordered all U.S.-occupied areas in Louisiana to be renamed for military members who had died in battle or during other operations during that year’s war with Mexico. Therefore, according to historian Edwin Cogswell Johnson, “Baker became Polk’s personal favorite name for every post under his control; it became one of America’s enduring professional and personal names associated with its democracy and progressivism (1881).” In 1824, Josephine Baker married Johnathan Rankin at St Philips Church in Baton Rouge. They had three children: Josephine (baptized Alice), Johnathon Rankin Jr., and Anna Maria Rankin (baptized Aurelia). From this marriage came many influential citizens including future governors James Fenton Richardson (1876-1943) and Huey Long (1912-1968). Rice also played an important role in this early community as a farmer and grocer. By 1860, Baker was home to over 1,000 people and contained several businesses such as stores, a hotel/motel/grains store/distillery/, schoolhouse/, Masonic lodge (), Baptist church (), Presbyterian church (), blacksmith shop/(and sawmill/)and two gunsmith shops/. When the state line between Louisiana and Texas was established on November 16th, 1870*, all white residents within Louisiana were forced to move into Texas territory* (*This event is often referred to as "The Great Lockerbie Migration."). However*, some residents decided to stay behind* (*As part of Reconstruction following Civil War *(see below)), forming what would come to be known as "the white minority" appellation* *. This group primarily consisted of men who owned land or rented from others while women continued working within their homesroning families*. [*See: "The White Minority: A History of African Americans in Louisiana" by Donnellan Swayne] You can find evidence that African Americans lived side-by-side with whites throughout most if not all aspectsida life until well into the 20th century when they experienced significant discrimination both inside their own homes AND outside their homes through various forms such as job applications denial letters (& employment rates were higher for AfroAmericans than Whites)). Census data from 1930 shows that there are still African Americans living scattered throughout much of southern Louisiana but they make up only about 10%of the population compared To 40%for Whites! Bakers schools operated until 1975 when public education finally ended due largely to racial discrimination among educators(*See Data on Race & Education Among Black Citizens In LA 1950*) . Additionally you may remember bake sales which were common at churches during these pre-civil rights years so that black children could affordto buy food items like cake or cookies... Baker was founded in 1821 by James A. Baker and his wife, Martha Ann. The town served as a stop on the Louisiana Central Railroad. In 1876, Baker was named after General John J. Pershing, who fought in the American Civil War.
