Baker, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. The community formed in 1838 when John Baker and his family moved to the area from Illinois. The town name is derived from Englishman James Baker who first settled near the present-day city of Baton Rouge in 1795. The current courthouse was built in 1912 and is one of the few remaining grand old buildings in downtown Baton Rouge. It replaced an earlier courthouse which had been destroyed by fire on December 30, 1906. Other notable landmarks include Stonewall Jackson's grave (which still stands), a Baptist church with a bell tower that can be reached by a short walk down French Street and two contributing residences on Third Street which are also significant for their architecture and content. Baker's fortunes changed after he became mayor of Baton Rouge in 1907 and helped to revive the economy of the city following its long decline during prohibition years. He left office in 1911 but returned to politics after World War I as owner and operator of several successful businesses before dying at home in 1925. His wife Agnes served as mayor until her death in 1936; she was later buried next to her husband at Mount Olivet Cemetery just east of downtown Baton Rouge.
