It is named after General James Baker who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Secretary of State under Franklin D. Roosevelt. The town was founded in 1892 by white farmers who moved from nearby Baton Rouge to start a new life in what had been a remote corner of the parish. The first post office was built in 1898. By 1910, Baker had a grocery store and three churches. In 1925, the first black resident was born in the town; Reva Thomas became the first African American woman to be ordained as an Episcopal minister in Louisiana. In World War II, Baker was home to two large military airfields: one for bomber pilots and one for fighter pilots; both were used extensively during the war years for training Bomber Command personnel and RAF ground crews on various types of aircraft. After V-E Day, many civilians returned to live in Baker thanks to wartime generosity (including $30 per week food stamps given out until 1959). In recent years, much development has taken place around downtown Baker including residential units (including several high-rise buildings), retail outlets (including several big box stores), a movie theater/cinemas complex with multiplexes throughout central Jefferson Parish (prominent among them Regal Cinemas), and new public housing developments adjacent to Interstate 10 interchange on SH 146 which opened up space formerly occupied by an old partisian cemetery that is now called "Lakefront Village". As more residents move into the area surrounding downtown or into other parts ofJefferson Parish due to job opportunities or higher taxes levied by state government since Katrina struck New Orleans,[1] it is becoming increasingly difficult for Baker's small community - particularly its small business owners - to keep up with changes outside their locale without moving away altogether or developing elsewhere along I-10 highway corridor which skirts downtown Jefferson Parish just south of Lakefront Village proper where all these businesses are located.

Baker, Louisiana is a small town located in Livingston Parish, Louisiana. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest parish in Louisiana and the second smallest in the United States. The parish was created on November 1, 1836 from parts of Plaquemines Parish. The first settlers in Baker were refugees from Hurricane Katrina who had fled to what is now Baton Rouge. They built a cabin near present-day downtown Baker and started a cattle farm. In 1845, they founded a store and post office in what is now downtown LaPlace. In 1870, three brothers named Waddell founded a gristmill on the north side of town for grinding corn for local farmers. The mill was destroyed by fire but was replaced by another gristmill about 10 years later which still stands today as part of the old LaPlace Commercial Historic District. In 1895, John Waddell donated land to build an all-purpose school which became known as La Salle University School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (later renamed LSU). La Salle University School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology played an important role in cotton production until it closed its doors in 1974 due to budgetary cuts made during President Nixon's administration. However, LSU reopened its doors more than 40 years later as one of America's leading agricultural research universities with campuses throughout Louisiana and beyond
Baker was formed by two brothers in 1881. It became a town in 1902 and a parish in 1912. In 1971, it became an independent city.
