By 1910, Baker had a post office, two churches, a school and two stores. In 1915, residents of nearby Marksville built a dam to power their local water system which led to increased business for both communities. In 1925, Baker became part of Jackson Parish when it was established following disputed territorial boundaries between Louisiana and Mississippi. Shortly thereafter, the population of Baker reached 1,500 individuals and it continued to grow until World War II when it declined due to wartime shortages of food products and other resources. After the war ended, Baker experienced rapid growth as new residents moved in from surrounding villages- many of whom became involved in agriculture or other related businesses downtown. Today, there are over 2 dozen businesses located throughout downtown including several restaurants and bars which continue to serve up traditional American cuisine while also providing services such as lawn care or petitting jobs for locals during summer months.
