Baker, Louisiana is a town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. It was founded in 1812 and named for Captain John Baker of the ill-fated brig "Omaha". The first post office established in Baker was called "New Orleans" because it was situated on the New Orleans River. In 1827, the name of the town changed to "Baker" after Capt. John Baker's home town of Pittsford, New York. The population of Baker peaked at 10,000 in 1907 but has declined since then due to migration to other areas in Jefferson Parish. However, the community remains an important agricultural center with a wide variety of crops and livestock. The first gun range in Baker was established on a farmstead nearpresent-day Baton Rouge. In 1875, G.L. Henschel opened the first Pistol and Rifle Range in Baker with .36 caliber rifles only. Today, there are over sixty pistols and rifle ranges scattered throughout Louisiana including four located in Baker alone!

The town grew rapidly due to agricultural production and development around its railroad depot which opened in 1881. In recent years, Baker has seen declines in its economic activity and population due toooter factors such as increased travel within Louisiana or neighboring states or the decline of nearby oil and gas production; however, it remains a notable cultural center with several prestigious institutions including The Baptist University (formerly known as Tulane University) and LSU's School of Veterinary Medicine/Veterinary Center having their home there since before World War II. Today, Baker's economy primarily depends on tourism which helps support its vibrant downtown area full of art galleries, restaurants and shops while also providing some local revenue through various taxes levied on businesses operating here. The town was founded in 1827 by John Baker and his wife Anna. They named it for their father, who had died in 1824. The first store in Baker opened on the corner of Elm and US 83. In 1836, Baker's brother Samuel built the first sawmill in the area. In 1840, John Auld bought 780 acres (280 hectares) of land from Robert Epps to form what would become Baker County. In 1849, he sold additional land to James Addis for $5,000 dollars. That same year, he also donated five shotguns and fifty rifle rounds to local militias during the Mexican-American War. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln appointed John Pemberton as governor of Louisiana after defeating Confederate General Braxton Bragg at Battle of Baton Rouge. He served until 1865 when he resigned because of military duties in Georgia while also serving as United States Minister to Spain under President Johnson. In 1865, Alfred Ivey purchased 2 square miles (3 km²) of territory east of present-day Baker from Jules Ferry for $10 million dollars which formed what is now St Tammany Parish
