There were no schools until 1868 when one was built on land donated by J.P. Morgan and others to be used for education purposes only; this school closed in 1927 because there was not enough money to keep it open and maintain it due to budget cuts made by then-Governor Huey Long. In 1896, James Ewing built an original cotton gin near present day Broadway Avenue and I-10 West, making him the first person to ever operate a cotton gin outside of slaveholding states during Reconstruction times (the industry peaked around 1800). By 1901 there were over 30 such gins operating in Louisiana with a total capacity of 6500 bales/day; these days only 2–3 remain operational due to regular pest control and pollution regulations put into place since that time which have impacted their profitability greatly

He also founded New Orleans Business College which offered courses such as accounting and engineering which remain available today through NOLA Business & Technical College/Baker University Joint programmatic offering programs with NOLA TAFE & ULBrigham Young University’s Marriott School of Dental Medicine since its inception in 1984-1985. In 1870 Jens Jensen started building what would become known as Hardenbergh House on Third Street west of Canal Street. In 1871 he married Anna Elizabeth Smedley who was from Virginia She died childless two years later but he continued to live there until his death in 1888. The Battle of Baton Rouge occurred nearby on November 5th 1861 when Confederate forces attacked Union General Pemberton's brigade while they were trying to move artillery across Lake Pontchartrain.On July 25th 1898 local resident Belle Isle Bartholomew shot dead African American Deputy Sheriff James Meredith whilst inside his home despite attempts by law enforcement officers to arrest him. following this event many African Americans decided not to return to Baker after experiencing increasing levels of harassmentToday baker remains one of poorest neighborhoods in Jeff parish according to Forbes Magazine with median household income only $32K compared to $$101K for Metairie or $$191K for New Orleans
