Baker is a town in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in what is now Baker was Captain John Baptiste Ligonier in 1718. He and his family came from France and were the first permanent settlers in what became Lafourche Parish. In 1802, Colonel James Knerr built a cabin on the east bank of the Indignette River and named it "Baker". Baker grew rapidly during the 19th century as cotton plantations were established throughout southern Louisiana. First settled mainly by French Canadians, African Americans began arriving during Reconstruction (1868-1912) after Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House ended fighting in Virginia. Many black men worked on plantation fields until they could find their own homes or opened businesses in Baker and other black towns across south Louisiana during this time period. During World War II, many patriotic citizens donated wartime supplies to helpLafourche Parish resist Japanese attack; these donations are memorialized with a plaque on Interstate 10 near downtown Lafourche that reads "In Memory of those who gave generously during World War II". After 1945, Baker experienced significant growth as an agricultural center due to increased production of corn oilseed rape and soybeans for local food production and export. Baker, Louisiana is a town located in Webster Parish, Louisiana. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Baker is the second most populous town in Webster Parish after Alexandria and it's third most populous municipality. The first settlers to Baker were farmers who arrived in the early 1800s. In 1814, a group of men from Illinois led by John Belcher established a small community called Newberry on the east bank of the Iberia River. They named their new settlement after General James K. Polk, who had served as governor of Missouri during the Mexican-American War and was soon to become president of the United States. The name Newberry was changed to Baker in 1825 when Reverend Nathaniel Wigglesworth relocated his family from Illinois to what is now Webster Parish. In 1827, Baptist preacher Elijah Boudreaux purchased land at what is now downtown Baker and erected a chapel which he called "the House on the Hill." He started preaching here on October 3rd of that year. By 1830, Baker had become an important center for religious services for all denominations in southeastern Louisiana due to its location on state Route 6 across from Tulane University (later Tulane School of Law). In 1840, Isaac Newton became one of only two white men elected as mayor of Baton Rouge following Louisiana's admission into the Confederacy during the Civil War WhenBATon Rouge seceded from France Union forces captured him and transported him back to Baton Rouge where he died in prison Shortly before his death Newton donated $1 million dollars towards building high school and university system in Baton Rouge Upon his death lies claim by various heirs over this donation
