As of the census of 2010, there were 5,614 people residing in the town: 2% black or African American; 98% white; 1% Hispanic or Latino; 0.1% Native American; 2% Asian; 0.1% Pacific Islander; and 1%.

Baker is a small town in the parish of Thibodaux in Orleans County, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,683 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New Orleans-Metairie-St. Johnthe Evangelist Parish seat. The first European to visit Baker was Antoine de la Salle on July 4, 1698 while on his way from Mobile Bay to Terrebonne Parish. La Salle named one of his outposts "Baker" after John Baker who had been an early settler in Acadia and then Baton Rouge (now Baton Rouge). He also founded a local Anglican church there in 1711 which still stands today as the First Baptist Church of Baker. In 1802, James Kenedy built a two-story brick house here for himself and his wife Mary Ann Kenedy which still stands today as part of the downtown core of Baker. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson's forces burned down all but three buildings in this small town during their advance uponBATON ROUGE for what would become known asTHE TEXAS CAMPFIRE. General Jackson's order caused great destruction and many homes were destroyed or used as military barracks until Reconstruction began more than 50 years later when these structures were replaced by new ones including the current First Baptist Church building now called "The Governor's Mansion". From 1840 to 1865; much time during THE WAR OF THE SOUTH against Confederate forces occurred here including skirmishes with units from neighboring Metairie Parish near present day Gentilly Boulevard and Old Hammond Road; Battle of Bienville Bridge resulting in one dead general and over 100 injured soldiers; Siege Of Vicksburg followed by liberation by Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865; The Civil Rights Movement starting with Dr Martin Luther King Jr.'s march from Selma to Montgomery Alabama on September 5th; The demolition of racially segregated housing projects beginning with Joe Frazier's fight at Madison Square Garden on February 8th 1969 marked commencement of an era that saw integrated bakeries throughout Louisiana becoming open to everyone regardless race or color...Today, business activity continues along Main Street downtown with several high rise apartmentsidon't reflect its heyday back when it housed breweriesand grocery stores
Baker, Louisiana was founded in 1814 by the brothers John and Samuel Baker. The area that is now Baker became a part of the United States of America on January 30, 1821. In 1827, John and Samuel Baker were killed in an action against Indians. Their estates were divided and the land around Baker was sold off to settlers. The first post office in what is now Baker was established in 1830. Today, there are over 100 businesses located in and around the city of Baker.
