The first European to visit Baker was Father Gabriel Mora de la Cueva on July 8, 1692. He named it after Jean-Baptiste Bouchard who had been killed during the French and Indian War near what is now Terrebonne Parish. In 1802, surveyor John Kirby established a post office at Baker and named it for General James K. Polk which he located about due east of present day Baton Rouge on the Yazoo River delta area then still part of Alabama. In 1810, Captain David Richardson built a white house on the site wherepresentday Baptist Church stands today as Richardson's Chapel and County Courthouse Annexe. Captain Richardson served as an officer in Company G (Lafayette Volunteers) 1st battalion 3rd infantry Regiment Ulysses S Grant's army during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865 under General Robert E Lee at Perryville and Harper's Ferry Campaigns before being discharged at Andersonville Prison Mobile District No 2 Alabama March 9 1865 with rank of captain It was not until 1872 when A&P grocery store owner Thomas J. Fenton purchased land east of present day Baptist Church from James K Polk that what would become Baker began its growth as an agricultural center with early seed corn production by Wm Henson followed by cotton farming beginning in 1898 also making this community one of Americ
