Baker, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of St. Tammany, in northwestern Louisiana. The population was 4,683 at the 2010 census. The name "Baker" is derived from the French word bache meaning "ouster" or "burst," which may have been its earliest reference to the town's location on a bend in the Mississippi River. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson bestowed upon Baker a land grant that included present-day Baton Rouge and other communities in what is now Orleans Parish. The community's history begins with Baptist missionaries who arrived here in 1822 to spread Christianity among Native American tribes who lived near by. After several years of work, they completed their mission and returned home when hostilities ended. The first post office was established in 1827 and remained open until it closed in 1915; the town's first store was also founded that year. By 1860, Baker had a population of 1,500 residents and was one of seven promising towns designated for construction of a Union Pacific Railroad line through Bossier Parish eastward to New Orleans; however, only two were built and later abandoned due to financial difficulties. In 1865–1866 local congressman James Waddell developed plans for an oil refinery on Bayou Teche but these plans were never realized due to Congressional opposition at the time; instead he constructed a district courthouse which still stands today (renowned as one of Baton Rouge's most classic examples). During World War II Baker served as an airfield within radar range of New Orleans and participated extensively in coastal bombardment operations off both Louisiana coasts including Dive Bombing missions against Vieques Island on July 15th 1944 while others strafed various targets along Iberville Peninsula On September 2nd 1945 United States Navy Squadron VF-8U flying A6M Zero’s bombed Japanese shipping lanes off southeastern Louisiana killing over 100 sailors including Rear Admiral Takeo Shimatsu (commanding Unit 721) during Operation Neptune’s Spear
