Baker, Louisiana is a small town in Ascension Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,598 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for John Baker who donated land to be developed as a town in 1868. The first post office was established in 1870 and the first store opened in 1872. The name change from Prairie View to Baker in 1907 when it became an incorporated village. In 1927, Baker became a city and has since grown rapidly with population reaching 2,000 by 2010. The economy of Baker is based on agriculture with livestock farming and manufacturing being its mainstay industries. Most of the jobs are related to transportation or services such as health care and social assistance. There are also some small businesses that have emerged over time including a clothing store, convenience store, bakery and restaurant. Baker has two primary schools - Frenchman Elementary School which serves students from Preble Avenue through Indian Creek High School; and East Central Middle School which serves students from Forest Park Drive through Grandview Boulevard/Park Place Apartment Complex. There are also three charter schools - Booker T Washington Jr./Sr.,boot camp for boys; Heritage Academy for Girls; and Stroudsburg Academy for PK-12th grade students - which serve children not covered by traditional public school systems in Baton Rouge or other areas within the metropolitan area but who need special education orivalent programs that do not meet the academic requirements of traditional public schools located outside their neighborhoods or communities of origin).

The town's growth began during the late 1800s as a result of its location on creeks and rivers that passed through the area. One of these waterways led to what is now known as Interstate 10 near Bakertown and other towns in Plaquemines Parish. The industry that made Baker one of America's most important communities came about during World War II when war supplies arrived via boatload from Japan and other countries. This led to an influx of people who founded businesses such as grocery stores, pet shops, banks and Cancel Fairs which are still held each year in memory of those who died in service or were injured while fighting overseas. After World War II ended, many residents left for various reasons including annexation by Baton Rouge; lack of jobs opportunities; pollution caused by oil production; political instability; and social changes brought about by new technology such as television (which had become popular throughout much of America). Today, Baker is home to a variety of businesses including two hospitals - one operated by University Health System (UHS) and another managed by Baptist Health Southwestern (BHH). There are also a number of restaurants including Papa John's Pizza and Chick-fil-A which have helped make this small town one of local anchor buildings along I-10W Boulevard which runs through downtown with its several dozen shopping centers close at hand
Baker, Louisiana was founded in 1837 by John Baker and his wife Esther. The town is named after General James K. Polk who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1880, Baker had a population of 300 people and was a stop on the Underground Railroad.
