In the early 1800s, Baker, Louisiana was a tamed and quiet community. However, in 1857 an event that would change the course of history occurred when shots were fired from a rifleship off the coast of Louisiana and killed three people. This event is often referred to as the "Quartermaster's War." It marked the beginning of what is known as The American Civil War. The ship USS Monitor was designated to serve as flagship for Commodore John F. Kennedy during this time period. On July 4th, 1857, after many days of sailing off the Texas coast, she came upon what appeared to be a peaceful fishing village with only a few strategically placed gunshots heard in the distance. As soon as they got closer they realized it was not just any fishing village; it was Baker Village which had been under Confederate command since 1861! Commodore Kennedy decided to investigate and found out that there were over 50 Confederate sharpshooters stationed at Baker Village and that they had open fire on any Union ships or sailors who dared approach their territory! It seemed like this peaceful fishing village could become another bloody battleground if war continued to brew between North and South! Kennedy quickly sent word back home for his fleet of warships to gather at sea so he could take action against these treasonous Confederates! Unfortunately for them, Abraham Lincoln's new administration refused to fight in what is known as The American Civil War because they believed slavery should continue unchanged! Thus began one of America's most costly wars – The American Civil War! In 1865 Baker Village fell under Union control once again meaning that its residents never experienced another conflict like that one… until now!!

Baker, Louisiana is a small town in the United States located in east-central Louisiana. The town population was 3,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette Parish government. The first settlers in Baker were French Protestants who came to live in what is now southeastern Baker County in 1827. They founded a trading post and village called "Baker" on the banks of the Sabine River. By 1840, there were about 150 people living at Baker and 10 miles (16 km) south of Lafayette, where General Nathaniel Banks built his military headquarters during the American Civil War. In 1863, when Confederate general Robert E. Lee was retreating through Union territory following his surrender at Appomattox Court House, he halted near what is now downtown Baton Rouge and ordered his troops to burn down any buildings they could find with incendiary munitions - an event that became known as "the burning of Baton Rouge". This destroyed much of the old city center and produced severe damage to churches and other important infrastructure including bridges and roads. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, many freedmen moved into central Louisiana from Mississippi because it had become more difficult for them to get work as farmers or mechanics because of discriminatory practices by state governments. Some white landowners also decided to sell their land back to African Americans for $1 per acre (0.50 per square kilometer). The new arrivals established businesses such as grocery stores, cotton plantations, lumber mills and chicken farms; some also worked on local farms while others learned how to farm from freedmen or their parents. This period saw a dramatic increase in agricultural production due largely to advances in technology: improved irrigation systems allowed larger fields to be cultivated with less input; large numbers of black workers—primarily men—were hired out by White employers for dwarf tasks such as picking peas or harvesting sugar cane; these men formed what has come been called "the backbone" of agriculture throughout southeast Louisiana until recently...It should be noted that Blacksmiths did not gain entrance into white society until after World War II when they began working alongside Whites...The integration of Blacks into White society led directlyto socioeconomic changes within African American communities which have had a lasting impact on southernLouisiana

Baker, Louisiana is a small town located in Webster Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. The name of the town comes from early French settlers Jean Baptiste and Pierre Baker who named it "Baker" after their father. The first post office in Baker was established in 1827. It was named for General John C. Baker who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a United States Congressman from Louisiana. In 1872, the Post Office moved to its present location on FM 521 south of town after being lost for years in a swamp near present day Thibodaux. In 1945, Baker had its first Electricity Plant which provided power to all of Webster Parish and parts of Lake Charles parish until 1964 when that plant was shut down due to cost overruns. During World War II, local businessmen developed oil wells around what is now downtown Baker which allowed them to profitable sell gasoline without having to truck it upstate or deal with national tariffs. In 1949, construction began on the current courthouse which replaced an earlier structure burned down by a lightning strike in 1922. In 1957, Hurricane Betsy destroyed much of the downtown area including most of the school (later rebuilt) and business districts along US 71 north of town; however all but one house sustained only minor damage and are still standing todaystone buildings dating back to that time line as part of what is now called "The Downtown District."
Baker, Louisiana was named for General James A. Baker who fought in the American Civil War. The town was founded by white settlers in 1871 and grew rapidly during the late 1800s.
