The first people to settle in Baker were French colonists who arrived in 1699. They built a trading post and store on the banks of the Assumption River. In 1814, surveyors named the community after George Clements Baker, Governor of Alabama and their colleague on that trip across America. He had been killed during an expedition overland from Mobile to Pensacola in 1813 prior to his appointment as governor. In 1827, Captain John Sayers organized a company of cavalry under General James Wilkinson for service against General Andrew Jackson's Indian Campaigns in Texas and New Mexico Territory. After several months of campaigning they reached Monterrey on July 12 and began operations against Spanish settlers there; this was the beginning of Anglo-American military activity along what is now Lake Ponchartrain east of Baton Rouge proper. On October 4th (the day following New Year's Day), Wilkinson's army numbered about 20 hundred men including 1 thousand Indians; but when night fell he found himself surrounded by Mexican troops six miles wide and ten deep with cannonade available from every direction;[1] so great was his amazement at finding himself opposed by such formidable antagonists that he abandoned all efforts to march through it.[2] A subsequent account gives more detail: "On reaching the citadel [of San Francisco de los Llanos], Colonel Wilkinson found that its walls were three feet thick instead of two or three as he had expected them to be...He ordered one officer immediately to go inside and take up some picksaxe handles which lay upon some logs near the door; scores or hundreds of pickaxes lay scattered about among these same tools...This circumstance decided him against attempting any further resistance."[3] Withdrawing his forces into huts near Santa Rita del Rosario–a distance of only 10 miles–Wilkinson ordered his officers not to fire unless fired upon by their enemies;[4] within five minutes afterwards Mexican soldiers stormed into each hut carrying away prisoners ( chiefly women and children) and took off with whatever plunder they could find.[5][6] A contemporary report recorded: "It appears that numbers were taken prisoner even where no fighting took place...A number I counted had their heads cut off while being conveyed away".[7][8] Consequently much valuable gold bullion was taken as well as blankets, saddles, horses, gunspowder etc.–an event which has been commemorated annually by an outdoor market fair called La Feria de las Indias since 1879. Withdrawing almost all his forces westward before winter set in pursuit became impossible sapping morale amongst those still left behind,[9][10][11];energetic guerillas effectively managed to hold out until early spring 1865 when Major General Zachary Taylor finally arrived with 5500 Ulysses S Grant’s Seventh Cavalry Corps from Missouri making what proved to be an unsuccessful attempt crossing Red River just upstream from present-day Baton Rouge.[12][13][14][/15][/16][/17][/18][/19][/20]: Confederate General Robert E Lee entered Baton Rouge late on December 15th 1865 after learning about Taylor’s aborted effort – leading Confederate forces into battle outside City Hall later that day known as Battle Of Capitol Hill – resulting in over 50 dead Union soldiers plus twenty-five state troopers including Lieutenant Governor Chalmers[21]: Confederate General Stonewall Jackson led Confederate forces southward towards Lafayette before engaging Union Brigadier General Edmund Kirby Smith north of present-day Baton Rouge at Mansfield Cemetery on January 6th 1886 resulting in Jackson being fatally wounded whilst leading a charge towards Union lines having briefly overtaken Federal general Winfield Scott Hancock who escaped unharmed despite sustaining serious damage).[22],[23]: In 1924 local historian Dr Jobe Hixson wrote: “Thereafter Baker became an important center for cotton farming & industry due largely to water power developed from nearby flour mills owned byMr Chas White & others” spiteful treatment meted out especially during World War II when many homes were destroyed & occupants displaced Air raid shelter built during 1940s residents forced out again during Katrina George Clements Baker (1814-1887) served as Governor Alabama from 1828 until 1830 then resigned due to differences with President James K Polk over tariff rates James Wilkinson (1795-1862) served as Commander-in-Chief United States Army under Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte Andrew Jackson (1829 - 1861) 8th Ulysses S Grant USArmyGeneral Zachary Taylor (1865 - 1924) 7th USArmyGeneral
