In 1812, a group of men from Baker, Louisiana set out on a journey to find new land. The men were inspired by the tales of Captain John Smith and his exploration of America. They decided to settle in what is now Louisiana after hearing about the rich resources available there. The first people to live in what is now Baton Rouge were the Cajuns. These people learned how to cook and hunt from the Spanish settlers who had come before them. In 1819, Congress passed the act that created Louisiana Territory. This Act granted citizenship to all those living in the territory and allowed for its own government. The territory was divided into counties, which were then divided into districts. The districts were further divided into precincts (which are still used today). Finally, each precinct was divided into households (which are still used today). Baker, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,707 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Baker were French colonists who came to the area in 1795. A post office called "Baker" was established in 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1822, a church and school were built here; the first Baptist church was built here in 1865. In 1865, John Latham erected a sawmill on the river below present-day downtown Baker; this mill remains operational to this day. At that time, Baker had a population of only sixty people but soon became known as one of the most important cotton plantations near Baton Rouge due to its strategic location and access to water supplies. The plantation operations continued until after World War II when many of the plants were closed down for lack of competition from other businesses within New Orleans metropolitan area or elsewhere within Louisiana state government limits. Afterward, Baker slowly regained some residents as local governments began efforts to redevelop areas such as downtown Baker into mixed uses with housing and retail stores while preserving certain aspects of its agricultural past including farmland used for cattle grazing and crop production today known as Parkview Farms (now part of Prairie View A&M University). By 2000, however much development had occurred outside of downtown; few if any buildings remain from those days before industry replaced agriculture as the primarystay of life for many residents. Today's Baker skyline features several large apartment complexes along with small businesses located around old-fashioned streets that run east-west through town center - similar architecture can be found scattered throughout neighboring Livingston Parish which also experienced rapid industrialization during this period following World War II although there has been very little recentresidential development here since then apart from some conversions/remodelingof olderindustrial properties around new community centers now home to professional offices/museums etc.. Today's Baker skyline features several large apartment complexes along with small businesses located around old-fashioned streets that run east-west through town center - similar architecture can be found dispersed throughout neighboring Livingston Parish which also experienced rapid industrialization during this period despite there having been very little recentresidential development here since then apart from some conversions/remodelingof olderindustrial properties around new community centers now home to professional offices/museums etc..
