Baker, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Jefferson in theoodoo Hills region of southeastern Louisiana. It was founded by General John C. Breckinridge on the site of an old plantation in 1853 and named for him. The population was 996 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Baker was Captain John Pemberton. He built a cabin on what is now known as State Road 190 in 1854. In 1857, he married Jane Shreve, who had also come to Louisiana from Kentucky with her parents and siblings. They moved to what is now called downtown Baker and began to grow crops and make furniture. In 1865, they bought land east of present-day Interstate 10 and started a cotton gin that still stands today. Over time, the Bakers became major landowners in the area around Baker, having acquired over 2,000 acres (1 km2) of land by 1900. In 1979, General Motors made its first large investment in southwestern Louisiana when it purchased 865 acres (291 ha) near present-day Baton Rouge for $5 million dollars ($100 million today). GM would later build its largest plant there – which eventually became one of America’s most iconic symbols – but it was not until 1984 when Baker residents got their own television station after petitioning their local government for years: KMLA (Channel 6). At that time, only about 20% of Americans had access to electricity; however, thanks to KMLA’s broadcasts (and subsequent deregulation), this percentage has steadily grown over the years to over 60%.

Baker, Louisiana was founded in 1808 by Captain James Speed and his wife Elizabeth. The town was named after George Baker, a Revolutionary War lieutenant who fought at Camden County. In 1836, the town became a state capital and was named for Governor John C. Breaux. In 1898, the town become an incorporated village and was renamed Baker City.
